Opinion: Any #Technology can be judged by how helpful it could have been for ordinary people pre-1900s. I picked the period for the overlap of being after the Industrial Revolution, but before Henry Ford drowned us in cars. Any technology of minimal or no help to people back then can be challenged.
One particular point that struck a chord with me is Hoboken having nearly double NYC's population density. Even though Hoboken has very few structures over 5 stories tall. Skyscrapers that cast shadows over entire streets are non-essential to increased density. Good street design and public transportation enabled this.
The single most effective action for improving indoor air quality is ensuring good ventilation. However, when faced with extreme temperatures or poor outdoor air quality, keeping doors and windows shut becomes necessary for mitigating harm. When that happens, it becomes prudent to take measures that minimize indoor air pollution.
When is it acceptable to have #Pollution? It comes as a by-product of making goods and services. Pollution from a given good or service can be justified if A) its absence would result in more deprivation, B) no better alternatives are available and C) no better mitigation techniques are available.
Pollution can be a necessary evil sometimes but most of the time, it simply isn't. Either way, that is determined on a case-by-case basis through critical examination. There are no short cuts.
Some cooking appliances and practices cause less indoor air pollution than others. Nowhere is this fact is more appreciated than when having to cook in an enclosed, poorly ventilated space.
Using electricity instead of burning fuel for heating goes a long way. Additionally, it also helps to opt for boiling, steaming, simmering and baking over frying, deep frying, grilling and anything involving high heat.

Anthropogenic pollution represents the vices of our age. Greed, stagnation, neglect, apathy, desperation. Those come to mind. Its absence in any city, on the other hand, represents progress, humanity, empathy, empowerment, if not just good geographical fortune.
We have the technology to do away with pollution. Let's make use them.

The 24-page report, ââYou Can Smell Petrol in the Airâ: UAE Fossil Fuels Feed Toxic Pollutionâ documents alarmingly high air pollution levels in the UAE, which create major health risks for its citizens and residents and contribute to the global climate crisis. The UAE is one of the worldâs largest oil producers and home to seven so-called âcarbon bombs,â the worldâs largest fossil fuel production projects. Air pollution and climate change are directly linked, as the burning of fossil fuels contributes to air pollution and drives climate change.

In Northern Alberta, Canada, sit the Athabasca tar sandsâthe world's largest known reservoir of crude bitumen, and a major driver of Canadaâs economy. The vast majority of Canadian oil production comes from the extraction and processing of the crude bitumen found in the tar sands. But while Canada prospers off the tar sands industry, Indigenous communities downstream are in the grips of its toxic impact. It is well documented that the people of Fort Chipewyan, in northern Alberta, have been struck by disproportionately high rates of cancer, and their proximity to the tar sands has long been the suspected dominant factor contributing to their sickness. In a new feature documentary, "Killer Water," award-winning journalist Brandi Morin and award-winning filmmaker/director Geordie Day delve deep into the heart of the environmental crisis plaguing the Alberta oil sands, uncovering the hidden truths that have long been ignored. The film exposes the detrimental impact of toxic tailings ponds leakage on the delicate ecosystems, water sources, and human life in and around Fort Chipewyan. Through stunning visuals and compelling narratives, Morin and Day take viewers on a journey that highlights the injustices faced by the Indigenous community living in the shadow of this industrial development. âKiller Waterâ was produced in partnership with @therealnews, @IndigiNewsMedia, and @ricochet_media.
