There has recently been a huge rush of people trying out Mastodon. This is also noticeable in the number of people reading my earlier Mastodon Guide. I wanted to take this opportunity to provide a brief list of usage tips that I wish I had at hand when first setting

There's a fundraiser underway to try and save Edinburgh's beloved Filmhouse.
Just backed it. #Edinburgh without the Filmhouse is just wrong, it's a wonderful part of our cultural city. My second home since I moved here long ago as a student, made friends there, have been exposed to cinema from around the world I'd never otherwise have seen. It's a treasure.

@ErrataRob he really has no idea. The value of Twitter is in the people who use it, not the design or the product itself. He’s treating it as if it’s a car. I don’t talk to my car! I don’t share with it stuff and expect to learn from the exchange.
@Danacea I agree. However I also think the demise of Twitter leaves a gap for creators like journalists/comedians/scientists etc who are looking for a platform to broadcast their work to a wide audience with some room for comments. Mastodon does not do that (nor should it, IMHO) - and Twitter can't be trusted. So there is a gap.
@detachedspork If even your watch is excited your washing machine must be over the moon!
@kjhealy “These be the pears?”
I talked to the The Verge for this deep dive into the muddy waters of generative AI and copyright. It’s complicated! https://www.theverge.com/23444685/generative-ai-copyright-infringement-legal-fair-use-training-data
The scary truth about AI copyright is nobody knows what will happen next

Generative AI models have taken off in 2022. They can generate code, text, art, and more. But there are serious questions about their use of copyrighted data for training. Are these models legal? It’s a difficult question to answer.
