After an enormous amount of work and dedication from FreeCAD contributors we are delighted to announce that FreeCAD Version 1.1 is now released and available for download. There are significant amounts of improvements and new features.

End-to-End Encryption is good but metadata protection counts as much. Names, group descriptions and memberships, avatars, who talks to whom ...

Both #deltachat and #signal go to great length to protect all the metadata that WhatsApp grants itself gratuitously. #Matrix stores similar scales of metadata on their servers, even if you can choose which server stores it.

Everything is better than #Telegram which additionally stores message contents in all group chats/channels and most 1:1 chats.

Cambalache's First Major Milestone!

After more than 5 years,  1780 commits and 20k lines of handcrafted, artisanal Python code I am very pleased to announce Cambalache 1.0 !!!

Cambalache is a WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) tool that allows you to create and edit user interfaces for Gtk 4 and 3 applications.

In v259 we introduced the concept of "NvPCRs", i.e. additional TPM PCRs, that are implemented based on TPM NV Indexes in PCR mode, rather than true PCRs. PCRs are scarce, and this relieves the pressure a bit (not too much though, NV index…

Open source absolutely killing with this one. A simple, easy to use purposeful screenrecord with smooth cursor anims/camera follow. So cool and available on linux too!

Big Tech is at it again.

Some of you might have seen this already. Google has announced a new policy for Android app developers, which would require them to seek Google’s permission if they want to distribute their apps outside of the Google Play Store (on their own website or on alternative app stores). This would entail:

1) agreeing to their terms and conditions
2) paying a fee
3) uploading a government ID

Which is wrong on so many levels. Nobody should be forced to register with Google if they don’t want to use their services.

In doing so they would be extending their gatekeeping (tentacles) into distribution channels where they’re just not a legitimate authority.

At Vivaldi, we believe you have the right to run whatever software you want on a device you own. That’s why we’ve co-signed this open letter, together with other 53 organisations, requesting Google to back off on the proposed policy before it enters into force.

(Plus, they have have a pretty cool logo 😄)
