I would like to point out something very serious. Years ago I developed a technique for shifting serial data into a 74hc595 chain without use of a microcontroller. I have not been able to help but notice that people have been using raspberry pi's instead of my simple circuit.
For the same reason you DONT actually need 32G of ram to run a web browser, you don't need to use a Pi to convert serial data to parallel. I mean cmon, Its using a 555 as a BUFFER. a BUFFER!

Your 1990s files are slowly turning into magnetic dust. Leontien Talboom at Cambridge University Library is leading a rescue mission for our digital past. She uses hobbyist tools to pull data from moldy disks that standard drives can't touch. She even recovered lost lectures by Stephen Hawking. You can use her Copy That Floppy! guide to save your own archives. It requires specialized hardware like the Greaseweazle to capture raw magnetic pulses. Don't wait until the iron oxide flakes off for good. Check your storage boxes for those chunky rectangles before they become silent plastic.
🧠 Magnetic decay destroys data after 20 years.

The archivist preserving decaying floppy disks

It's a race against time (and magnetic decay) to preserve decades of cultural history stored on obsolete hardware.

Ken Shirriff's post from 2019 is trending on TwoStopBits, and for a reason: it's a great post about 80x25

IBM, sonic delay lines, and the history of the 80×24 display

What explains the popularity of terminals with 80×24 and 80×25 displays? A recent blog post " 80x25 " motivated me to investigate this. The ...

The Underwood Multi-tool (c. 1850)

Decades before the first Swiss Army knife (1891), London’s Underwood of Haymarket crafted this "harped" pocket kit. Designed for Victorian sportsmen, it features a hoof pick, saw, and corkscrew. A rare 19th-century masterpiece of portability.

If you looked up "cute computer" you might find the XYZ Electronics Micro-portable computer. This Z80 based computer runs CP/M and used Sony's new 3.5" floppy drive with manual shutter floppies. Shown here, it's running the game Zork. While it kinda looks like a Mac, this was from 1983.
My opinion or advice: Don’t share bad news or toxic content from or about the toxic beings out there. Stay informed - yes, but don’t supply the doomscrolling machine for others. Don’t tell the world that everything is shit. If we start being fatalistic and let the toxic mind waste flow in our life everything will be shit. It’s what the toxic people out there want. Share action against that shit. Share people who do something. don’t promote the end of all things. Promote the fight for good.
Heated discussion yesterday about the recording length of #audiocassettes, as a very informed #llm "confirmed" that recording in mono would double the capacity
