Anytime I say #AbolishThePolice someone inevitably comes along and asks “but who will keep us safe without the cops?” and meanwhile thousands of regular people in Minneapolis have spontaneously self-organized a round-the-clock patrol of the city, replete with a city-wide intelligence network and radio dispatch system, to keep themselves safe from violent assaults by the police.
Here's the transcript of our recent interview with the DFW Support Committee on the defendants of the July 4th Prairieland ICE facility incident. You can find this and more at https://tfsr.media/zines/#July2025

We are now sharing the transcribed zine of our interview with Kate Bertash on ubiquitous, ai-driven surveillance like Flock camera systems, where the recordings go & strategies for organizing against by them in our communities

In a world where control of #communication networks is increasingly centralized, #DIYnetworks offer an independent alternative. This presentation shows how to build up your own autonomous #meshNetworks with low-cost hardware components and open source tools such as #Reticulum and #MeshChat. We will present practical steps for the construction, configuration and integration of sensors, communication and computing power. We are also discussing how such #networks can be used in #humanitarianCrises, such as the organisation of aid measures through solidarity initiatives.

This workshop offers a detailed journey through the world of do-it-yourself radio networks and #autonomousCommunication structures. Using an exemplary system structure, we show how to realize cost-effective, flexible mesh networks with #LoRa #RNode, Reticulum and MeshChat. In doing so, we not only dedicate ourselves to the technical requirements – such as the optimal hardware selection, antenna adaptation and network planning (keyword “Network Planning 101”) – but also consider how these technologies can be used for #humanitarian purposes, for example at #CADUS.

Please consider helping us stock up on radios, solar panels, batteries, and SBCs before tariffs roll in. Right now each handheld device costs between $20 and $50 to produce, and every solar-powered rooftop node costs us around $100-$200.

We know a lot of people have bigger problems right now than making sure the local mesh network is well-resourced, but these networks help with emergency response and local autonomy. They're something we really believe in!

Building a solar-powered Meshtastic radio network in Denton, allowing anyone to text without cell, power, or internet

If you've been watching for the right time to hop on the LoRa train, it's now for less than $50 or later for over $150. These bad boys don't grow on trees. Rokland has a great selection, but at the very least you could buy this Meshtastic starter kit, plug it in, and start your journey. If exposed circuit boards scare you, search around the site and find the end user product of your choice. Good luck out there!
