I hoped never to see concentration camps like the ones I grew up in appear again in this country. Reading this breaks my heart.
Seems it's no coincidence why Trump picked Pam Bondi as his attorney general. She's been helping him cover up his connections to Epstein since back in her Florida AG days smh.

Trump DOJ Now Says Epstein List Doesn't Exist

FBI: Quick, distract them from the Epstein files!

Today is 30 days that the US military has occupied Los Angeles.

The fiscal hawks never for a moment think of the absurd amount of money being spent to terrorize civilians, children, harass families—all to satisfy the ego of an aspiring fascist. This is not freedom. This is tyranny. And unsurprisingly the NRA is nowhere to be found because they were never actually about anti-tyranny, they were always about pro white supremacy.

Oooh, and then what happened, JD?

Watching Democratic Party leadership campaigning against Zohran Mamdani instead of Trump’s giant fascism bill, and the New York Times adopt an internet Nazi troll as its de facto editor to go after Mamdani, all because of some milquetoast democratic socialism, all in the span of about a week, is such an astonishing confirmation of everything the left has been saying about these institutions for decades.

Like…it would have been difficult to script such a pitch-perfect meltdown over a brown guy who wants free buses in New York City.

This is what the NY Times chose to highlight from the Netanyahu/Trump meeting, compared to Al Jazeera.

You decide which is the important news.

There is a new setting for server operators in #Mastodon 4.4, under Administration -> Server Settings -> Discovery, called "Allow external sites to see your Mastodon server as a traffic source". If you're running a server for a larger group of people there is no privacy downside to enabling this, and it will help make the fediverse more visible as a traffic source to the rest of the web.

With Mastodon v4.4.0 instance owners can enable HTTP referrers. That means:

If somebody clicks a link in a Mastodon post (e.g. to a news article), the link target owner (such as the news site operator) can see that a user from that instance has visited their website.

They do _only_ get the instance domain (e.g. metalhead.club). No information about the user!

I've enabled this setting, because I am sure that it will increase awareness of Mastodon's existence. 💪

Edit: (in previous versions, Mastodon did not send referrer-Headers)

REPORTER: What specific actions did local officials take between 1:14am, when the first flood emergency alert came out, and hours later when the river started flooding?

KERR COUNTY SHERIFF: We're in the process of trying to put a timeline. That is not my priority at this time.

REPORTER: Was the emergency manager awake?

SHERIFF: I can't tell you at this time

@petergleick What is with these narcissists and letters all of a sudden?

@petergleick
Well, we certainly don't want to raise the issue that a favored ally is proposing what to all intents and purposes is a premeditated war crime at the very least.

Unlike bombing schools and hospitals, you can't claim it was because Hamas was there. It lacks even that implausible deniability.

@petergleick twump still wont get the peace prize...

@Marixt

Obama certainly didn't deserve his.

@whoosh he deserved more than twump did
@whoosh @Marixt The fact that Obama got one is the reason why Trump wants one.
@edgeofeurope @whoosh thats part of it, dude is scared he wont havr a legacy

@petergleick

If I was Trump, I think I would be more comfortable receiving a Nobel Peace Prize nomination from Adolf Hitler rather than Netanyahu.

@petergleick I can already hear "yes but Al-Jazeera is a biased Qatari propaganda outlet! Bad! Bad! Bad!"

@petergleick

WTF,,,,,, unbelievable.

@petergleick A recommendation by Netanyahu should count negatively.
@petergleick
Al Jazeera: News about the Netanyahu/Trump meeting.
NY Times: Distraction from what actually happened during the Netanyahu/Trump meeting.

@petergleick

The UK government took AJ off air.

You can only watch it on YouTube, albeit with a warning that it is funded by brown people.

@rzeta0 @petergleick what a time to be alive. I get the feeling the powerful are fearful right now.
@Tedre123 @rzeta0 @petergleick So they just keep digging the hole deeper

@rzeta0 @petergleick last time I checked (a few weeks ago) it was on Sky. France 24 is about channel 510, Al Jazeera is either the next channel or the one after. Sky doesn't use all numbers so may not be 511 or 512 but it's there. As one of the news sites I use I cannot imagine it being censored in the UK since then without it being reported.

When do you think it was taken off air in the UK?

@securedllama @rzeta0 @petergleick AJ(E) was on freeview broadcast but the contract with the broadcaster wasn't renewed - it looks like this was at least partly because AJ has focussed on digital streaming rather than paying out for traditional broadcasting, so it's available via a stream on various TVs and Devices that support it
@hashbangperl Thank you for the info. I didn't know that.
@petergleick
Not sure whether Netanyahu should be the one to nominate somebody for the Peace Nobel Prize
@novolander @petergleick There's no question about it for me. He should not.
@petergleick and that's why I watch/read AJ
@petergleick al Jazeera is from the Qatar government and the New York times is from USA not made by any government and the New York Times support Israel and al Jazeera supports Palestine that's it
@XxPppp678Xx @petergleick Yep. That's the *whole* story. Definitely nothing else to it! /s

@XxPppp678Xx @petergleick

This is why fedi is better than the corporate social media outlets. #WhackATroll

@petergleick the Nobel peace prize is a joke

@petergleick This is getting remarkably little coverage on my largely US-focused Mastodon feed, let alone mainstream media. Possibly because concentration camps are the New Normal.

Even in the UK, many of our immigration detention centers are much worse than our prisons, and have been for years. And our prisons are awful. The EU offshores immigration detention to Libya and to illegal camps run by Turkey in Syria. And so on.

And in the US, we've seen the whole kids-in-cages thing in his first term. Before Aligator Dachau.

Netanyahu's defense minister openly announcing a plan to force the entire population of Gaza into a small camp outside Rafah? Apparently that's just normal.

It shouldn't be. The history of concentration camps, **even in the US**, shows it is a catastrophe.

@petergleick The mantra of the N.Y. Times has always been, "Obey, Fear, Consume." 😞
@petergleick
NYT never fails to disappoint
@petergleick
Al Jazeera is my trusted news site. They manage to see the world as it is. The relationship between Trump and Netanyahu is so sickening.

@petergleick Years ago, if you'd told me AJE would become a significant news source for me, I'd've flat laughed in your face.

They're imperfect. All journalism sources are imperfect. But they're not bad.

@petergleick NYT je satira. Arabové myslí jen na sebe.
@petergleick Nobel peace prize for creating a camp from which people can emigrate or get bombed?
