Regarding the chemistry swap on the Insight, someone a lot smarter than me figured out an intermediate board that goes between the car electronics and the battery. Car still thinks it's a NiCad battery, actual lithium battery gets charged correctly by the intermediate board. It's not cheap (more than I paid for the car) but gives a significant performance and fuel economy boost.

I don't currently have an EV, but I hoping to put some money in my 04 Honda Insight (hybrid) at some point this summer. OEM NiCad battery pack is shot, want to upgrade to lithium and do the resistor mod (more power to/regen from the electric motor).

And I'd also like to EV swap one of my older vehicles someday (probably one of the Dakotas, so I can have a small usable EV truck instead of the giant ones they exclusively make these days). But that'd cost quite a bit of money!
