Social dynamics and relationships (not just romantic) are so incredibly complex.

Being caught up in some that fell apart (friends, relatives, groups), having dealt with some friendships of my own that fell apart…

There's so much hurt in the world.

Sometimes I have to remember that… I can't fix it. I'm not responsible for everything just because I happened to be close to some/all folks involved.

I can only hold on to the way some friend groups I'm in have grown and partially overlapped/merged. Don't only think about the ones that have splintered or exploded.

And… I'm not responsible for keeping up with everyone. If friend groups splinter, I have to make hard choices on where to spend my limited time and energy. It's not critiquing folks to not take their side of a given fork.

Still.

It hurts to feel connections deteriorate.

I checked out Horizon Worlds two years ago and wrote about my experiences, comparing it to Rec Room and VRChat. Horizon World is about to be pulled from VR platforms, so that's a fun time capsule now!

My opinions have changed a bit over time, but now we know that even with the near-unlimited time and resources of a big tech company, Meta could not come close to what the furries have cooked up in VRChat.

After about 3 years, my open source smart watch (Bangle.js 2) died, with the Bluetooth antenna inside disconnecting from the main board.

A known issue that I could fix with some careful disassembly (temperature controlled hotplate to melt the glue holding the transflective LCD screen in place), but I don't have those tools yet and I've already got other projects to tackle, so.. I bought another one. Pebble (repebble) looks promising, but it's close to twice the price, still preorder, and only has a 30 day (!) warranty for now. Bangle.js is one year.

(I've heard some folks with this issue have gotten a 50% discount on a new watch outside of warranty, bringing it down to material cost. I didn't want to wait and did want to contribute more to Bangle.js development.)

Thanks to Gadgetbridge for an open design, where I could just swap the device ID in the database to have all my steps now attributed to the new watch, and I could fake steps for the days I was without a syncing watch.
