I don’t know enough about the technical part of photography to earn a living through the photo instructional complex so I’m under no pressure to convince anybody to buy anything. Until two years ago, all my bird photos (including this one) were done on a non-DSLR superzoom 1” sensor camera, Sony RX10IV. I learned almost everything on that camera; most important that the best photos come from figuring out what the camera you have does best and doing that. Over and over. No additional gear needed.
Excited- my library has "The Heart of What Was Lost" by Tad Williams finally available! #AmReading #LibraryFinds
@anoux @binarymelon ah… I always interpreted itvas the years of the app?

Happy Appreciate a Dragon Day! I have dragon book recommendations to celebrate (and a mention of my own dragon shifter books!).

@Johannab I like that you said “giggling” for a cat 🐈 😍😆❤️😍

@binarymelon heheh

Yeah… I am guessing the dev can just put any kind of years on there. I am not going to download it, this kind of wierdness is just a red flag to me lol

@Alice I don’t find Bluesky stale at all. Authors for one are active there
A couple photos of the dense quilting I am working on right now. #quilting #art #sewing #textileart #texture
Anyone use Pixelnest for #Pixelfed for iOS? It says it’s 17 years old… but Im not sure even Pixelfed was that old..? And their updates are only a week old

Pixelfed exists today because of @nlnet's vital support since 2019.

Their grants helped build our ethical photo-sharing platform from the ground up.

The EU must continue funding #FreeSoftware projects, as we have proven, they can be hugely popular and shift the control back to the people, where it belongs.

@Jgbird to be fair the Sony rx10 series is kinda bonkers good

it's a bit of a legend to those who know about it

@elysia I still use it when I have a trip!
@Jgbird that is an incredible photo!

@Jgbird for years I've told budding photographers "you take the photo with the camera you have. Know everything there is about what it can and cannot do, and practice using it to it's best advantage.

Getting the photo you want is like a musician learning a new piece of music. You have to know the instrument you're playing.

@Jgbird I am in awe of those who manage to find creatures at rest and visible! 💖
@Jgbird do you do a lot of post production on your shots? The sharpness and clarity of your photographs are phenomenal.
@Fly72 I try not to, because I hate learning software. I’ll use the iPhone photos app to change contrast and highlights but I try to get everything good in the camera. When the light is nice, I try to get the metering and exposure just right. I was lucky to have these hummingbirds at the end of spiny plants with dramatic overhead light.
@Jgbird that is an awesome picture!

@Jgbird Agree with the “use what you have” sentiment.

I was lucky to have joined a photography group on Flickr back in the late noughties and learned so much from others who had a wide variety of equipment, lenses, and perspectives.

@Jgbird

Great photo & advice:
"most important that the best photos come from figuring out what the camera you have does best and doing that. Over and over. No additional gear needed." 🙂

You've got to start somewhere. Thanks for sharing! I started my telephoto journey on a Panasonic TZ41 followed by a Nikon D3300 with 55-300 lens. But that was before birding, and since I prefer solitude, I do not get into these "mine is longer" comparisons anyway :D Oh and great hummingbird as always. You are nailing these photos.
I would never have guessed that this was shot on a 1" sensor – I always assumed bird photographers were all of the longest-lens DSLR type (and to be fair, I figured they were among the few people to actually need those lenses). Thanks for your sobering thoughts on gear, and for the amazing photos as always!
@Jgbird The learning was worth it.
What a great picture of a beautiful bird
❤️
@Jgbird Ah man, that's just gorgeous 😍
@Jgbird True. I once asked a full time pro her advice. She said, as per your comment, paraphrasing, 'learn through doing'. Happy snapping 📷
@Jgbird very nice photo. it tickles my brain.
I was looking over some older images of mine... I need to get creative when making images again, like when I was still working things out.
