New Read - A Vampire in the Bathhouse

Luka is a handsome, chiseled vampire living in the demon realm. One day he's hungover and sore, so he goes to a bathhouse in the human realm to ease his pain and magically, he feels better. Enter Sakura, the 20 something man who is running this family bathhouse with his Grandfather.

Luka sucks Sakura's blood bonding them.

Basically, it's a slice of life romantic comedy between a pansexual vampire and the not yet ready to call himself gay bathhouse operator. Lots of strategically placed steam for mostly nude dudes.

Overall, cute and largely chill.

New Read - Delicious In Dungeon, Volume 10

Another of my weekend reads was Delicious in Dungeon, Volume 10. I read it while waiting in the car as my oldest took the SAT on Saturday morning.

A lot of movement as our heroes make their way to trying to save Falin, meet up with the Lunatic Magician. The ending of this volume. Oof.

Glad I already got Volume 11 checked out from my library! Phew.

Just...a bit more explanation.

This story is largely about teenagers trying to find themselves with parents not always accepting them, especially with Rin learning to acknowledge their transness. But also, it is a lot with spacy dream realms where the characters are different versions of themselves and meet souls that flutter around based on the true nature of the individual.

It was weird and cool and...kind of thoughtful.

Again, I am glad I read it.

New Read - Astro Biologist Pratess

My oldest is taking the SAT this morning, so I stopped at a nearby library to chill while I wait for him to finish. I randomly found this collection.

The story follows a trio of friends and their experiences in a dream reality of souls. It is very spacy and esoteric. Both self aware set in alternate realities and grounded about teenagers coming of age and accepting themselves in different ways. Whether it is Rin accepting their gender or Nagi accepting she wants to continue to live far apart from her mother. Reality is blurred in the story.

Unique read. Worth checking out.

New Read - Offshore Lightning

Offshore Lightning is a collection of individual stories from Saito Nazuna. They are mostly about mundane, everyday life.

The stories aren't flashy. They're all modern-ish, real, and personal stories about people just living with the highs and lows that come with that.

Some of the stories end with a hard stop, others end with no real closure. But, that's life and fits the style.

The stories were written in different periods in Nazuna's life and reflect the things people go through at different stages in life.

Overall, an interesting and unique read.

The individual stories are sometimes interesting, sometimes...too much. One story is set in South Africa in the 70s and the portrayal of Black people is so very racist.

There's also a multi-chapter story arc about a Bird Jesus who tries to spread his message that the birds had become too much like humans, which is destroying their society.

Basically, Tezuka created Planet of the Birds vs Planet of the Apes. Without one cohesive story, but with random vignettes throughout bird history.

New Read - Tomorrow the Birds (Single Volume)

I am going to name a few things present in Tomorrow the Birds (written 1971-1975) before going into my review...cause they're important to note: Violence, rape, Bird Jesus, murder, racism.

Now, with the out of the way, let's talk.

Tomorrow the Birds is a series of vignettes beginning in the 1970s where birds are given higher intellect and take over the planet as the dominant species, knocking out humanity.

Some stories are self-contained, some build on each other. But they start with bird takeover and go to advanced bird society over time.

New Read - Delicious in Dungeon, Volume 9

Knocking down more Delicious in Dungeon.

Volume 9 continued where 8 left off (obviously). It was well done. Continuing and pushing the plot forward of the Elven canaries eventually trying to shut down the dungeon, the attempts to stall them, and our lead party finding their way through.

I think they're going to make it.

5 more volumes left! Need to request the next two from the library.

New Read - Delicious in Dungeon, Volume 8

Got some of my TBR knocked out this weekend. One of which was Delicious in Dungeon, Volume 8. More eating in the dungeon.

The elven canaries arrive which adds a new layer to the plot as they appear to have their own, less than wholesome goals for the dungeons.

Also, changeling issues which were funny.

Shared a very intense screenshot that...may be a good reaction image for later.

All in all, great volume.

New Read - Tista, Volume 2 (Final)

I read volume one of this a few years back with @beneaththetangles. Tista is a two volume manga series from Endo Tatsuya, the creator of Spy X Family. This pre-dates Spy X Family and, frankly, is somehow more violent.

Tista is an abused, orphaned girl who ends up in a church organization that actually is raising up assassins in NYC to take out criminals. This is her story from beginning to its tragic ending. Content warnings include child abuse and violence.

I enjoyed it. It was a well told story. And the art was on point. But goodness, at times it was a lot.
