It only just hit me that the reason so many journalists (including, occasionally, me!) still post their work and some of their musings to Twitter is that it remains almost zero effort to do so.

Shows how a place can maintain the illusion of activity when people are only putting in a tiny fraction of the effort they once did.

OMG who did this? I am crying
I really like #whiskey, but I've been thinking about it's #environmental impact lately. And, damn, #Islay. This story (from a while back) is just about oil too. Laphroaig et al burn a LOT of #peat. https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.theguardian.com/uk-news/2021/aug/30/sustainable-scotch-hebridean-distillery-aims-for-net-zero-whisky
Sustainable scotch: Hebridean distillery aims for net zero whisky

Islay’s 9 distilleries burn 15m litres of oil a year. Now Bruichladdich is leading a radical effort to reduce emissions

it's weird how often people blame the technology of Mastodon for the failure of users to stick around instead of the most blindingly obvious, actual reasons:

1. habits are hard to break. people used to twitter or insta or FB are going to instinctually open those apps first

2. network effects are incredibly powerful. switching social networks isn't like trying a new toothpaste. networks move to new services *slowly* even when they're incredibly popular

Only recently did Hunsrück slate get its first eurypterid (a sea scorpion). This critter is estimated to be about 190 cm long! Based on its remains, it was likely carried for a distance before it was buried.

First record of eurypterids (Chelicerata, Eurypterida) from the Lower Devonian (Lower Emsian) Hunsrück Slate (SW Germany) - PalZ

For the first time, fossils of unquestionable eurypterid origin are documented from the renowned Lower Devonian Hunsrück Slate Lagerstätte in southwestern Germany. The gnathobase of a coxal plate and a body segment can be attributed to pterygotid eurypterids, probably to Jaekelopterus rhenaniae. These body parts from the Hunsrück Slate once more confirm the extraordinary large size that could be attained by this Rhenish eurypterid. Based on the usual occurrence in marine–terrestrial transitional facies elsewhere in the Rhenish Devonian, rareness in the Hunsrück Slate, and poor preservation, the Hunsrück Slate pterygotid remains are most probably allochthonous, and eurypterids are considered nongenuine elements of the ‘Hunsrück Slate biota.

Some corvid drama! I am not quite sure what happened here, but it looks like the adult rook got a bit annoyed by the juvenile trying to steal its food.

Also the Jackdaw in the background just observing and thinking, "Here we go again".
