Analyzing the DOOM code a little more, I find it impressive how John Carmack managed to create a data type that accepts functions with different parameters. This gives you a little more flexibility to make more advanced enemy AI. I'm liking C more and more over C++.
In practice, the most effective game engines are often moddable games. Unlike traditional engines, they already implement core systems—AI, physics, maps, behaviors—so developers only need to define content instead of implementing it from scratch. A clear example is GZDoom, whose modding framework enables the creation of fully standalone games.
