Getting a tiny bit of rain this evening... it's welcome, but so far it's in keeping with the pattern of the last few days: light sprinkles in the evening, but not really enough to compensate for the hot, sunny days. Of course the forest welcomes the relief, but what we really need is a proper soaking.

Seems like there's been a hatching of flying termites. They're flying around me and the computer, drawn to the light of my LED strip "chandelier". Every so often they land on my desk and screw each other. their delicate wings fall off, littering my desk.

They are a tasty treat for the geckos. last night I had two hanging out on the desk around my laptop, gobbling up tasty termites. In classic gecko form, each one tried to chase the other one off, but there was plenty for both of them. I started squeezing a few that landed on the desk and dropping them near the geckos. They loved it.

Tonight there's a gecko already stationed on my laptop, at the crease between screen and keyboard. Just now it was walking on the screen. its little feets were triggering the touch screen and it was navigating between various windows. Maybe there's a specific YouTube video it wants to watch 😆🦎💻.

Washer repair guy is like: I just woke up, call me back in 2 hours. 😆 I love that I live in a place that #islandtime is the norm. Don't you DARE try being in a hurry. 🥰

Our new power set up.

The charger on the left is always plugged into the generator cable, the inverter on the right always has the house main power line plugged in.

Start the generator, plug the cable in out there and the charger starts charging.

Everything electrical in the house is powered through the inverter, even when charging.

No more screwing around with a jumper cord or swapping plugs.

Saveur magazine did a story about some of my homies. I've attended this imu many times. If you ever visit big island, I'd recommend their imu experience. 🥹 🥰 #food #hawaii #culture #cooking #restorativejustice #community #foodsovereignty #solarpunk

Nobody asked, but this is my favorite banana bread recipe: http://www.thefreshloaf.com/node/6639/my-favorite-banana-bread-recipe-it-has-no-eggs

the only modification i make is to use 3/4 cup or 1/2 cup sugar (which the recipe offers as an option).

It has the added benefit of being vegan.

Here is the bananaguette I made today in the solar cooker using this recipe. It came out delicious!

i just pulled out the second batch, this one with walnuts.

It's a perfect way to use up old bananas.

7 years ago, there was a dead stick in the backyard of our little rental. I cut back the berry bramble and bleeding heart to give it space, created a mulched circle around it and fertilized it. That year it rewarded us with one rose. This year, it's taller than my son and covered with dinner plate sized roses with a spicy, almost cinnamon rose scent. He cut this one for me yesterday.

More than 17,000 people in Canada’s western Manitoba province were being evacuated on Wednesday as the region experienced its worst start to the wildfire season in years.

i started wondering whether uv lamps (like blacklights) might be useful to dry dishes washed with unfiltered water here. our main danger in unfiltered water is angiostrongylus cantonensis (the cause of "rat lung worm", or angiostrongyliasis).

i searched "uv light for angiostrongylus" and got this excellent open access article from PLOS Neglected Tropical Diseases - a journal that i used to be editorial manager of 😁 :https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC6772140/

it's a very nice literature review on the effects of uv light on various helminths that negatively affect human health.

the article included the following info: "Similarly, larvae of the nematode A. cantonensis exposed for 15 minutes to UV-A light were unable to develop inside an animal host."

blacklights are UV-A and i am now considering treating washed dishes with the blacklight in addition to air-drying them for a minimum 24 hours (which i already do).

i am very happy to have found this info, thankful to the scientists who did the research, and thankful to everyone who makes open access work. it feels pretty neat to have been a small contributing part of this incredibly complex knowledge production line, and to now be a beneficiary of the open knowledge that was produced.

working at PLOS wasn't always a picnic, but the scientists i worked with were amazing people with integrity, who genuinely cared about the research and the people impacted by the subjects they were researching. i feel proud to have facilitated the publication and sharing of their research findings to anyone - without subscriptions!

Ultraviolet sensitivity of WASH (water, sanitation, and hygiene) -related helminths: A systematic review

I got a whole bunch of weed mat from Craigslist for $20!

The edges are frayed, so I'm trimming the edges and cauterizing them (the same way you might seal a poly rope).

Going to give a bunch to @saltphoenix because the great garbage continuum has been very generous and it's good to share ☺️

Orchids currently in bloom at my place: a white and maroon dendrobium and a purple and white spotted phalaenopsis. Both are growing up off the ground (in the canopy).

Our snap dragons have also been self-seeding a lot since the first year. This is just a pretty flower when grown, but I do like flowers. The bluish-green leaves with pink in the middle make the seedlings pretty easy to identify once you know what you're looking for. #gardening #garden

Last seedling of the day is a favorite flower of mine: cleome. This flower smells super weird! It blooms like an alien spider and can grow quite tall, which means when it starts out in a 3' bed, the alien spider looms above me. I love it. It also deters rabbits and rats. The internet suggests it has medicinal uses, but I didn't know that before looking it up just now! So I've never done that, and suggest anyone considering it do research. 😅

Actually, I do have a couple more seedlings to demo today -- I realized there were some important ones to make sure we didn't weed out! 😅

Tomato seedlings. Some must be (and have been) weeded out so that others can thrive, but definitely don't weed them all out. Tomato seedlings might look similar to marigolds at first, but tomatoes have fuzzy stems. The leaf shape can vary a bit, depending on the specific variety of tomato. #garden #gardening

Cucurbits (squashes, cucumbers, gourds) have this funny thick set of initial leaves, rounded and spoon-like. The rest of the plant's leaves are thinner, hairy or even prickly, and symmetrical along the main vein with jagged edges. The veins on the non-cotyledon leaves of cucurbits remind me of a spider shape.

Note: Cucurbits can vary a lot in size and growth habit (whether they are bushy or climb up a trellis with a vine). Placement is kinda dependent on type. #gardening #garden

Beans come in 3 types of growth habit: bush, pole, and runner. It can be hard to tell which is which by the seedling. These are bush beans, which I know partly based on having labeled them while planting. 😅 Bush beans also tend to hold onto their initial (very-seed-shaped) leaves a bit longer than other beans, I think?

Beans in general have a wide range of colors for foliage and for fruits -- I've had beans with green leaves and beans with almost purple leaves. #gardening #garden

This is also a bean seedling, but it's a runner bean. Again, I know this partly because it was labeled, but it also doesn't have the little cotyledon leaves above the dirt. I don't know if this is always true, but I've found that my scarlet runner beans and black coat runner beans often don't show the seed-shaped initial leaves above the surface. They're still under ground with the roots. (They might not be considered leaves at that point? Idk, I'd still call them cotyledon.) #garden #gardening
