Thrilled to meet Mayor Choi of Sejong City! He’s working to make their bus system fare-free by 2025 & came to Boston to check out our progress. 🚌
Despite getting rid of 75% of its employees and not paying rent, Birdchan is still working pretty much the same as it ever has for most users. As a result, a large number of people I'd like to follow here are staying put over there. Rather than smugly telling ourselves that Mastodon is better, I think we need to start figuring out whether this is tenable or not. As a first step, I'd like to see a few celebrity Mastodon users stop posting over there. I have, and I'm hardly a celebrity.
In case you're wondering why we're so focused on transit, walking, and biking. There's one and only one way to fix this: shifting more trips out of cars. https://www.bostonherald.com/2023/01/11/boston-second-most-congested-city-in-u-s-fourth-in-the-world-traffic-report-says/
Boston second-most congested city in U.S., fourth in the world, traffic report says

Time lost to traffic congestion in Boston increased by a whopping 72% last year, placing it second for worst gridlock in the United States, and fourth worldwide, a new report found.

"There’s a difference between solving #homelessness and keeping it solved. Part of the solution would be making sure we learn what permanent supportive housing is, and who needs that, and what does that support mean."

-Dr. Jim O’Connell

‘If you want to solve homelessness in Boston, you’ve got to take a look at the real estate market.’

A conversation with Tracy Kidder, author of the upcoming “Rough Sleepers,” and Dr. Jim O’Connell, a trailblazer in caring for the city’s homeless people.

FYI The Square Root in #Roslindale #Boston re-opens today (Thursday) at 1 pm. The first time since the building was partly destroyed by a car being driven at 70 mph down a 25 mph residential street. Mastodon App UK

FYI - Mastodon provides some flexibility over how your followers see threaded posts.

If you haven't noticed, Mastodon puts any reply to a post into all your follower's feeds by default.

This is different from Twitter, which hides (most) replies-you need to tap on the first post to see them

You can control this! There's a button at the bottom of the editor.

Personally I set most replies and follow-up messages in threads to "Unlisted", but set some messages to "Public"

So far I have been extremely unimpressed with Mayor Adams, whose main strategy towards governing NYC to date has seemed to be "more police and less of everything else," but the new housing plan looks bold and comprehensive and exactly what NYC needs. I think Boston and San Francisco could probably learn from it. What do you think? https://www.nyc.gov/office-of-the-mayor/news/893-22/mayor-adams-get-stuff-built-bold-three-pronged-strategy-tackle-affordable-housing#/0

I love closing out the year with this. 😊

On December 31, 1995, exactly 27 years ago today, legendary cartoonist Bill Watterson published his final 'Calvin and Hobbes' comic strip.

How beautiful and appropriate it was, and a timeless reminder of what we have before us in 2023. ❤️

Happy New Year, ya'll!

"In #Massachusetts, #Black non-Hispanic women are almost two times more likely to die during #pregnancy or within a year postpartum than white non-Hispanic women, according to the MA Department of Public Health."

"#Doulas, who provide nonclinical physical, emotional, and informational support to families during and after pregnancy, can play a role in addressing these #HealthDisparities."

Black women are more likely to die during pregnancy. A local doula program aims to change that.

“You have somebody there who will speak for you when you can’t even speak,” said Phelicia Cadet, who is one of 58 women who have been paired with free doula services through Mass General Brigham’s Birth Partners Program.

I frequently see people saying that #Boston is a small city you can easily walk across. I'm new here so I haven't done it yet, so today I'm going to try walking from the southernmost accessible point to the northernmost point you can get to by foot without entering another city. (No guarantees because it's a bit rainier than I anticipated)
