I like walking around cities and looking at the buildings. My favourites are classical and vernacular architectures, and I also enjoy little ornaments and details on humble constructions testifying to the love and care someone put in them.
After joining Mastodon in an effort to leave big tech, I realized this could be an opportunity to look through my photos, share them, and even research some of the depicted buildings.

Historic building in the center of #Merano, 1913. The balconies, bay windows and turrets create movement on the #facade, making the large volume appear less massive.
The building interacts with the surrounding city: On the large street there are large shop windows and balconies. On the left, a narrow, medieval street with arched #porticos begins. Our building only suggests the first arches, thus widening the space at the intersection. Then, it marks the first arch with a turret. #architecture
The historical Plankenstein building was planned by Pietro Delugan and built in 1907 in #Merano. It looks quite pompous, but is nevertheless well inserted into the city structure. I also like how it features a #portico on the ground floor, protecting people from rain and heat. #Sudtirol #architecture #facade

🔥Why do so many gorgeous abandoned buildings get burned down?

This gorgeous derelict chateau in France was destroyed by a fire some years ago.

Every year so much history is lost to the flames, erased forever. All that workmanship and the stories, gone

A beautiful #belleepoque building in #Merano, Italy. I particularely like the building crown, where the roof is interrupted by a recessed volume with rich ornamentation. #architecture #ornaments #facade #Sudtirol
The Gletscherschliffe in #Merano is a large, sloped rock with a very smooth surface. During the ice-age, a glacier moved over this rock and sanded it down. Today it is located next to the #Tappeinerweg (a panoramic walk over the city), and kids love to climb up the slope. #FootpathFriday #Sudtirol
@AnnMyhre It's end of April 2025. Unfortunately I am *very* slow at posting.
In my last posts, I showed two beautiful #belleepoque buildings in #Merano, Italy, which was a tourism destination for wealthy people from Germany and Austria.
So what would they do there? For example, take a walk on the #Tappeinerweg, an easy footpath with views over the city. It was created/sponsored by doctor Franz Tappeiner, who reccomended light exercise and the "good", local air as a cure against tuberculosis. Not sure about this cure, but the walk is very nice to this day. #SilentSunday
Another beautiful villa in #Merano, Italy. Built in 1911, it is called the Villa Marchetti. #belleepoque #architecture #facade #doorsday #ornaments
The villa Posch in #Merano, Italy, built in 1913. Merano has Thermal baths and a relatively warm climate, and it was located at the southern end of the Habsburg Empire at the time. Therefore, it used to be an important travel destination for nobles and wealthy people during the #belleepoque. Most beautiful buildings from this time are still preserved today. #architecture #facade
Entrance to a residential building in #Zurich from 1928. Above the door, there is the painting of a woman playing with a baby, or maybe #breastfeeding it? #doorsday
