A Palais is a building similar to a castle, but unlike a castle, it is located in an urban setting. It typically belonged to the nobility or very wealthy individuals. In my opinion, it fits the bill for today’s #PhotoSuggestion, ‘Castles and Palaces’.

I worked in an office next to the palace for years and walked past it practically every day. Far less conspicuous than the building itself is Timm Ulrichs’ sculpture of a head-shaped paving stone (Kopf-Stein-Pflaster) on the other side of the street. The editing is actually a bit too over the top for me these days, but I quite liked it back then. Still, there’s something to it.

Let’s be honest, fellow #Hanoverians, #Hannoveraner and visitors to #Hannover: who knows the Palais, and who knows the sculpture?

Probably wasn't the best timing. I knew the sun is right behind the main building of #SchlossMannheim during the day, so you don't get much shadows to bring out details of the facade.
Did you know #MannheimPalace is the second biggest baroque palace in Europe, just after Versailles? However architects made sure that Mannheim palace has one more window than Versailles 😀

#TrakaiCastle in #Lithuania. We visited in February and were able to walk over the frozen lake to the island. Pretty cool.

Ein #Rokoko-Schlösschen im #DessauWörlitzerGartenreich. Es wurde ab 1752 als Sommerresidenz für Prinzessin Anna Wilhelmine erbaut, die die Lieblingstochter von Fürst Leopold I. von Anhalt-Dessau ("Der Alte Dessauer") war. Die Prinzessin heiratete nie und verfügte, dass Schloss Mosigkau nach ihrem Tod als Hochadeliger Frauenstift unverheirateten adeligen Damen als Residenz diente, wo sie ungestört leben konnten. Das Stift bestand von 1780 bis 1945.
Ich bin in diesem Dorf aufgewachsen, darum habe ich öfter mal Bilder vom #Schloss im Angebot – wie dieses hier vom Ostersonntag.

A charming #Rococo palace in Dessau, built from 1752 as a summer residence for Princess Anna Wilhelmine, the favourite daughter of Duke Leopold I of Anhalt-Dessau. The princess never married and, in her will, stipulated that after her death, the #palace should be converted into a Frauenstift – a secular "monastery" for noble, unmarried women, where they could live in peace. This Frauenstift existed from 1780 to 1945.
I grew up in this village, which is why you occasionally see photos of this palace from me. I took this one on Easter Sunday.
