The new authority in U.S. legal education rankings.

Last week, U.S. News & World Report CEO Eric Gertler claimed that law schools that have declined to provide free labor and internal information to U.S. News are violating the First Amendment. (Really.)

Mike Spivey has words for U.S. News here:

Regarding the delayed U.S. News law school rankings:

Will anything they produce at this point be viewed as credible? Should it be?

Yesterday, U.S. News announced that it is delaying the release of its forthcoming law school rankings by a week, presumably because schools found mistakes in the embargoed version of the rankings released this past Tuesday to law school deans.

The Law School Views Rankings are unaffected (and also untainted by the "kind of a joke" reputation scores U.S. News is still utilizing), and they are available for applicants to review now for free.

The U.S. News & World Report law school rankings that will be released later this month will be based on (1) data that has been publicly available for months, and (2) USN's "kind of a joke" reputation surveys.

Applicants more interested in #1 can weigh that data themselves using Mike Spivey's "My Rank" tool (https://myrankbyspivey.com).

Those interested in a 3rd-party weighing of the data need not wait for USN; they can reference our rankings from January:

@jackiegardina

All for folks pressing to make changes to the bar exam and licensing process.

But until those changes are made, it would seem that one key moral question for law schools before enrolling students and taking their tuition dollars is whether they have a good chance of passing the bar as it currently exists.

@jackiegardina

On LSAT, note that we use the 25th percentile in our rankings rather than the median. One thing law schools should value is their graduates being able to enter the profession. The LSAT, despite all its flaws, is the best pre-enrollment predictor of bar passage, and the higher a school's 25th percentile, the fewer 1Ls it is likely to have who will ultimately fail the bar (or drop out before getting that far).
