Things I Think Are Awesome

The Videogame Industry Does Not Exist, my new book with @themitpress is out now! This is my attempt to intervene in how we talk and think about gamemaking as not just an entertainment industry but as a cultural field, built up from complex tensions between commercial and creative pressures and identities.

It's open access, and you can read it here: https://direct.mit.edu/books/oa-monograph/5572/The-Videogame-Industry-Does-Not-ExistWhy-We-Should

I wrote a long thread on Twitter with a bunch of excerpts which I won't reproduce here, but it's there if you're interested: https://twitter.com/BRKeogh/status/1648452116749643778

People have been posting glaring examples of ChatGPT’s gender bias, like arguing that attorneys can't be pregnant. So @sayashk and I tested ChatGPT on WinoBias, a standard gender bias benchmark. Both GPT-3.5 and GPT-4 are about 3 times as likely to answer incorrectly if the correct answer defies gender stereotypes — despite the benchmark dataset likely being included in the training data. https://aisnakeoil.substack.com/p/quantifying-chatgpts-gender-bias

I have a new game! And it is out now:

Drift Mine Satellite is a maintenance text adventure about a person living underground in a limestone mine, and their work on the local communication network that has sprung up there.

It is a utopian apocalypse fantasy, a forever-camping world narrowed to linear miles of RVs parked under a mountain, the people who live in them, and the systems that interconnect them, both social and material.

So if I click the "follow selected followers" button it doesn't follow them, but instead I need to manually go through, copy their account URL, paste it into the search bar at the top, see their account listed, then click follow. That's...that's very elaborate.
...also I swear people who were on that "followers" list were people I explicitly followed when I migrated over...maybe if they migrate instances it nukes the connection? Confused...
Has anyone else noticed that following people sometimes doesn't...work? I tried following people back using this page (/relationships?relationship=followed_by) but they actually weren't followed until I manually copied their URL, put it in the search bar (I'm on PC) found the account, then clicked follow from there?

Research shows that people don't say "um" and "uh" because of nervousness.

Instead, one reason people say "um" and "uh" is that it tells listeners you want to keep talking.

The amazing thing is that we don't use them nearly as much when we're talking to a computer, like Siri, or when we're giving a formal talk—because we don't expect to be interrupted!

Been playing Call of the Mountain and I think it’s my new high water mark for VR. So gorgeous, and so many thoughtful design decisions! It’s PSVR2 so pretty rarified, but if you have a chance to play it, would highly recommend!
