I'm pretty sure I'm connected to people here in the NYC area and qualified to teach the basics of #infoviz and #dataviz. We have an emergent need at Parsons School of Design for this fall, so reach out if this might be of interest! Feel free to share with your NYC-based network.

Here's the course page:

Information Visualization | Course Catalog | The New School

This project-based course introduces information theory and the various means of visually representing the world with the intention of uncovering hidden realities and effects. Throughout the course, students explore, analyse and reconfigure quantitative and qualitative data and use fundamental graphical principles to present their findings. Students hence engage with mapping as a creative activity that sets the stage for the planning of design interventions. Open to: BBA Strategic Design and Management majors, Data Visualization minors, and Immersive Storytelling minors; other students with permission of BBA in Strategic Design and Management program. Pre-requisite(s): LMTH 1950 Quantitative Reasoning I; and PUFY 1030 Drawing/Imaging.

Today's productive use of #chatGPT: pasted in a research assistant job description and prompted it to generate a rubric via which to review applications. What was most interesting is how this reflected back to us some redundancies in the original jd.

#sandwichgeneration question here. Anyone know of a platform/service/system that would print out select emails for an elderly person who no longer remembers how to use their email account? Like a fax kind of system where my sister and I could send certain messages to be printed?

@DamnInteresting Yep. One of several reasons why I was so annoyed about this article a few years back speculating about Gee's Bend, Alabama becoming a "rival" Marfa destination. *groan*

Can Gee’s Bend—the Tiny Alabama Community Behind America’s Most Dazzling Quilts—Become an Art Destination to Rival Marfa?

A series of initiatives spearheaded by the Souls Grown Deep foundation aims to transform Gee's Bend into a tourist hub.

I was today year's old when I learned that #Zoom now has hand gesture recognition! I couldn't figure out how to lower my hand without clicking, but an interesting feature nonetheless.

Four causes for ‘Zoom fatigue’ and their solutions | Stanford News

It’s not just Zoom. Popular video chat platforms have design flaws that exhaust the human mind and body. But there are easy ways to mitigate their effects.

Have the banks considered eating less avocado toast?

My colleague Steven Faerm wrote this brief article on the pitfalls of new faculty being told "you'll figure it out" in lieu of proper pedagogical training.

https://www.gse.harvard.edu/news/ed/23/03/dont-worry-you%E2%80%99ll-figure-it-out

It reminded me also of recent remarks by Cathy Davidson with shocking stats - 3% of college students go on to pursue doctoral work yet the vast majority of full-time faculty are "trained" to teach with a focus on content and not pedagogy.
