Forgotten women of paleontology: Joan Wiffen, the dragon lady
#WomeninSTEM #histsci

In her autobiography, โ€œValley of the Dragonsโ€, she wrote that an academic advised her to sign as J. Wiffen when writing papers because โ€˜men have better chances of publishing than elderly female housewivesโ€˜.

Today marks 30 years since the first ensembles were produced at ECMWF. Now, they are at the core of medium, extended (monthly) & long (seasonal) range forecasts, providing a range of possible outcomes & the likelihood of weather events. โžก๏ธ

Attached: 1 image I've started a list of people on Mastodon working in fisheries or oceanography. It's small, so far, but I'll add to it as I find people. You can import the list more than once as the list grows. You can follow all on the list by using these menus: /settings/import and export/import Use import type=following list, data=merge, and the file to import is at this link: <https://u.pcloud.link/publink/show?code=XZXc12VZx30JIfrLtQYn4AHGpr3JKyrnocPk> If you find someone who should be on the list, send me their handle, and I'll add them.

I am a skyscape photographer and I like to focus on images featuring the Moon, the Sun and the planets in the night, twilight and day time skies. One type of skyscape that particularly appeals to me is the "timescape" - an image that depicts the apparent movement of an astronomical object in Earth's sky during a certain span of time. Over the years, I have been able to capture timescapes that depict different spans of time and the apparent movement of the Moon or the Sun due to the dynamics of the Sun-Earth system, several of which are in the showcase below.
