Freedivers, leftover cables and bits of clay: Cuba gets inventive to save its pristine reefs amid US blockade

With limited resources and sanctions tightening, conservationists are forced to find new ways to protect the coral reefs of Ciénaga de Zapata national park

🐡✨ A marine #glimmer: The white-spotted #pufferfish is nature’s greatest artist. Males work nonstop for a week, shaping large geometric circles in the sand to attract a mate.

By flapping their fins along the seafloor, they build intricate ridges, decorate them with #shells and #coral and sculpt a detailed maze-like pattern in the center. If a female is impressed by his craftsmanship, she may choose to lay her eggs there.

What a misleading, annoying, damaging press release from the University of Manchaster:

https://phys.org/news/2026-05-coral-infertility-ovarian-cancer-decoding.html

How did they go from a paper on coral cilia to ovarian cancer? The original paper does not mention cancer, disease etc. at all.

https://journals.aps.org/prxlife/abstract/10.1103/fhfw-f1nv

This kind of empty press-release salvationism lacks any integrity and harms the trustworthiness of science. University press offices should do better.

Coral study could help explain infertility and ovarian cancer by decoding cilia-driven fluid flows

A study by researchers at The University of Manchester, carried out alongside the Universities of Melbourne and Copenhagen, could hold the key to understanding the causes of long-term health problems, such as infertility and ovarian cancer.
