People with ADHD tend to get bored more easily — not because we’re lazy, but because our attention control and working memory face extra challenges. 🧠 New research suggests these cognitive factors help explain why boredom feels more constant. #ADHD

Why people with ADHD may get bored more easily, according to new research

A new study suggests that boredom proneness in people with ADHD traits may stem from difficulties managing attention and working memory, providing support for theories that tie boredom to failures in executive control.

This echoes so much of what I see in #ADHD coaching, where one of the most powerful things we explore early on with clients is how much their environment can shift within a given context to fit around their strengths. When we stop forcing ourselves into systems that don’t suit us and instead shape work and life around how we naturally thrive, we stop swimming against the current. Only by letting go of structures that no longer serve us we can allow space for something more sustainable to emerge
New research from the University of Bath offers fresh insight into ADHD, showing that leaning into personal strengths can significantly boost wellbeing. The study found that adults with ADHD who were encouraged to apply their strengths day-to-day reported feeling more positive, more capable and more settled in themselves. Changing one’s context and environment to fit their cognitive profile can make a big difference in how ADHD is experienced. A recent piece in Science News explores hypercuriosity as a possible strength in ADHD, not just a by-product of impulsivity, but potentially linked to a deeper neurological drive to explore and connect ideas. The article highlights research suggesting that curiosity and impulsivity may involve the same reward pathways, and raises the concern that suppressing impulsivity in classrooms and workplaces could also dampen curiosity. https://www.sciencenews.org/article/adhd-advantage-hypercuriosity

People with ADHD may have an underappreciated advantage: Hypercuriosity

ADHD is officially a disorder of deficits in attention, behavior and focus. But patients point out upsides, like curiosity. Research is now catching up.

AI is top of the mind right now and our July workshop "Advanced AI Strategies for SpLD tutors in FE and HE" got rave reviews: "This presenter has lived experience to share and also effective case studies which helped to relay the strategies brilliantly"; "It was much better than any previous AI training that I have attended." Good news! We're offering repeats of this training led by Dr Dionysios Kyropoulos in August and September for PASSHE members only. Check our website to book your place.

A new systematic review on neurodivergent PhD students analyses 31 peer-reviewed articles, highlighting key challenges and strengths. Executive functioning difficulties, time blindness, task switching, and overwhelm, pose significant barriers, while hyperfocus, creativity and deep thinking are clear strengths. Unspoken academic norms, the hidden curriculum and inadequate support remain major hurdles. Read the preprint here: https://osf.io/preprints/osf/cs9ub_v1 #ADHD #autism #neurodiversity #PhD #academia

On Tuesday I had the privilege of speaking at Oxford’s EDI Roundtable on #Neurodiversity. It’s inspiring to see the university breaking down barriers so neurodivergent students and staff feel they belong and thrive. More than 140 attendees joined thought-provoking discussions on policy, experience and inclusion. Fantastic to see this momentum continue! Huge thanks to all involved.
