In just under a fortnight, on 19 June, my book "111 Places in Space That You Must Not Miss", will be published by Emons in Germany, followed by the UK on 21 July & the US on 2 September 🪐✨📕

It's a tour guide of interesting places in our Solar System, the Milky Way, & Deep Space beyond, & describes what you'd find & learn if you were able to visit them 🙂

Here's a preview of the cover & a few chapters – it's available to order in all the usual places 🙇‍♂️

Found: the most powerful explosions in the known universe.

"Extreme nuclear transients" likely happen when a massive star is shredded by a supermassive black hole. The black hole hides in gravitational darkness until it's silhouetted by the remains of its victim.

Tonight: we have the ninth launch of SpaceX’s Starship Super Heavy from the company’s Boca Chica test facility in Texas. This sub-orbital flight will feature the first reflight of a Super Heavy booster, and will feature several tests including engine-out during landing burn, control during booster flip, and engine efficiency during high-angle of attack return. No chopsticks catch on this one… launch is set for 7:30 PM EDT/23:30 UT. Upcoming stakeout stream: https://www.youtube.com/live/uiCgZrc51i4?si=hst1_gL5X5JKgOkf

Linking again to this #ForbiddenPlanet fan project.

A lot of people have made 3D computer or physical models of the Enterprise from Star Trek, but this is the same sort of thing with the settings from Forbidden Planet.

Starting with a tour of the C57-D based on fan floorplans, I think:

Great ambient sound, too!

I'm glad this is finally out, and the most important part is not that it's a very distant dwarf planet (though that is very cool), but rather that its existence in that orbit completely blows a hole in the Batygin & Brown "Planet 9" hypothesis. So, there almost certainly isn't a hidden distant giant planet in our Solar System.

(Which quite a few of us, including @sundogplanets and myself, have argued was the case for years, but this rather confirms it)

An extreme cousin for Pluto? Possible dwarf planet discovered at solar system's edge

A small team led by Sihao Cheng, Martin A. and Helen Chooljian Member in the Institute for Advanced Study's School of Natural Sciences, has discovered an extraordinary trans-Neptunian object (TNO), named 2017 OF201, at the edge of our solar system.
