“It is not for a legislator, a judge, or a Commander from The Handmaid’s Tale to tell these women what to do with their bodies during this period when the fetus cannot survive outside the womb any more so than society could -- or should -- force them to serve as a human tissue bank or to give up a kidney for the benefit of another." — Judge Robert McBurney, Superior Court of Fulton County

America, if we don’t want to become the next country to slide into authoritarian horrors, it’s time to stop squabbling and vote blue no matter who. No demanding a unicorn, no protest votes, no abstention for purity politics.

Or there won’t be a next time, to make things right.

My new book, Storm Waters, is available for pre-order at Fairwood press. I'm so excited: it's my first new novel in a while and the start (hopefully) of new series featuring charming antihero Marty Storm. https://fairwoodpress.com/store/p169/STORM_WATERS.html#/

Prohibition has just ended, and the US is still struggling in the depths of the Great Depression. But for notorious playboy and ex-bootlegger Marty Storm, life couldn’t be better. Only his best friend knows about his knack for water magic—and for making “problems” disappear—though no one knows his family’s shipping business was built on sorcery and murder. When he’s accused of a gruesome murder, he knows he’s been framed, but corrupt cops and his conscience aren’t his only problem. Vengeful spirits, a little girl with a strange connection to the Los Angeles River, a crate full of trouble, and broken memories, force him to unwind the horrifying secrets of his own past and return to the dark heart of his family in the bayous outside New Orleans. With some unlikely allies both new and old, Marty must confront the ugly source of his family’s fortune and power. Murder, magic, love, death, and family: Marty Storm has come to the tipping point of his life, whether he knows it or not, and to control his destiny, he’ll take a desperate plunge into dark magic he swore he’d never use.

Just finished reading "The Year without Sunshine" by @naomikritzer in @UncannyMagazine - what a beautiful, fantastic work! Had it saved for a while and finally had a quiet afternoon to read it. HIGHLY recommended for anyone interested in #Solarpunk, #Hopepunk, or #SpeculativeFiction. I think it might become my go-to example to show someone of Solarpunk (a few reasons why below). And it recently won a #NebulaAward for Best Novelette. We need more stories like this!

I can’t remember if we set up the WhatsApp group because of the pandemic or the civil disorder or both. My Minneapolis block had always been reasonably friendly—people would take their kids around on […]

Accounts pushing disinfo/misinfo about Iran vs. Israel appear to be crowding out the few credible sources remaining on Twitter/X. As @jsrailton puts it: "Twitter is awash with a flood tide of falsehoods tonight. Some is the work of people trying to farm revenue. And some is disinformation seeking to seed specific false perceptions."

Can’t believe they’re going to roll 2024 out to Production late on a Sunday, right before a public holiday, without testing it in Staging, and without fixing any of the bugs in 2023

"Why don't people want to pay for streaming anymore?" cry the companies who split streaming into 40 different services that keep increasing in cost while randomly removing content without warning, and shoving ads into our paid services.

Yup, sure is a mystery. A real head scratcher.
