"Again and again and again and again, Johnson & Johnson has released products that it knew were dangerous (and refused to remove from the market those that it learned were harmful): it knew there was asbestos in its baby powder, and it knew that asbestos and talc were carcinogenic; it knew that its anti-psychotic drug Risperdal caused weight gain in children and increased the likelihood of strokes in the elderly; it knew that its new hip implant was likely to fail; it knew that its opioid Fentanyl was highly addictive; it knew that its birth control patch Ortho Evra contained estrogen levels that far exceeded allowable levels. It knew and it still pressed its pills and procedures into the hands of doctors and patients."

Bad Company

For decades, Johnson & Johnson was one of the most trusted brands in the world. The maker of bandaids and baby shampoo, its name was associated with care for our health and our bodies and, more importantly, for our children. Even when in 1982, one of the company's best-known and most

FDA Layoffs Could Compromise Safety of Medications Made at Foreign Factories, Inspectors Say

Beyond staff cuts, the departures of some longtime investigators in recent months have left less experienced people tasked with rooting out dangerous manufacturing practices.

@rbreich That's a really good point to remember.

"Not Alligator Alcatraz. Alcatraz held people who had been convicted in a court of law.

This is Alligator Auschwitz, which will hold people who are not charged with anything other than the crime of being brown, just like Auschwitz held those for the crime of being a Jew."

@ZhiZhu @rbreich I beg to differ. Auschwitz was an institution of industrial mass murder. Entire trainloads of people (that's 1000+ humans in case "trainloads" sounds too abstract) were killed immediately after arrival in purpose-built facilities. And it was one site in a grand scheme of genocide.

Trump is evil. Alligator Alcatraz must not be. But it is not Auschwitz.

@Hinz_oder_Kunz @ZhiZhu @rbreich Give them a few months.
@hosford42 @Hinz_oder_Kunz @ZhiZhu @rbreich they won’t start mass murdering people in Florida. Instead they will deport them to countries they’ve never been to, like South Sudan. Or send them to a 3rd country prison like in El Salvador. They won’t kill thrm immediately, but they will severely harm them and likely shorten their lives, deliberately and intentionally. It’s not literally Auschwitz, but the intent is the same
@FlockOfCats @Hinz_oder_Kunz @ZhiZhu @rbreich Until that becomes too inconvenient. Then they will do it right here.
@Hinz_oder_Kunz @ZhiZhu @rbreich so once you spend all summer packing this full of people, what’s the plan for this shoddily constructed abomination when hurricane season hits?
@ReasonableMustelid @ZhiZhu @rbreich the fact that hurricanes seem to be part of the plan is extremely disturbing, to use diplomatic language (source:Wikipedia, citing https://web.archive.org/web/20250701192512/https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/donald-trump/alligator-alcatraz-set-open-trump-desantis-rcna215943 )
'Alligator Alcatraz' opens, with Trump in attendance

Donald Trump is in the Florida Everglades Tuesday for the opening of a controversial immigrant detention center dubbed "Alligator Alcatraz."

NBC News
@Hinz_oder_Kunz @rbreich @ZhiZhu so yeah, that’s a death camp.
@ReasonableMustelid @rbreich @ZhiZhu so far it's a very questionable detention center and some MAGA bullshit talk.
When a hurricane hits, I sincerely hope for an evacuation plan to be carried out largely unrecognized as some other MAGAtrocity sucks up all attention.
@ZhiZhu @Hinz_oder_Kunz @rbreich keep on hoping, but we can’t even manage evacuation plans for people in regular old neighborhoods. Detention camps don’t stand a chance.
@Hinz_oder_Kunz @ZhiZhu @rbreich what do you think they plan on doing with them if nobody will take them? They don’t plan on letting them back out, I’ll tell you that much. That gang prison in El Salvador isn’t going to hold them all. There’s a reason they called it the Final Solution and not Step One.

@passwordsarehard4 @Hinz_oder_Kunz @rbreich

Nazi #ConcentrationCamps were originally referred to as "deportation" camps, where Jewish people would be held prior to being deported. But actually deporting Jewish people turned out to be slower and more expensive than other options. So... The #Nazis turned to the "Final Solution" which was much more "efficient."

The first US Concentration Camp - #AlligatorAuschwitz - in #Florida will cost $450 million per year to operate. So…

@Hinz_oder_Kunz @ZhiZhu @rbreich

Auschwitz was established in 1939, almost immediately after the German invasion of Poland. It was used to imprison people immediately: initially former Polish soldiers. They didn't start the mass executions until almost two years later, in August 1941 after the invasion of the USSR.

Auschwitz was still Auschwitz for those two years before the mass murders began. Before it was a factory for killing people, it was a prison.

Calling a prison Auschwitz isn't historically inaccurate. It just means that the mass murders haven't started yet.

@passenger @Hinz_oder_Kunz @ZhiZhu @rbreich

hmmm no. Auschwitz was established in 1939 as a concentration camps.

The purpose of a concentration camp is to kill people through labor.

It was not a prison.

@rbreich The branding is right there, folks. Not Alligator Alcatraz—Alligator Auschwitz.

A failure of imagination with these folks will always have on our back foot.

@DanMorgan @rbreich They've copied Dachau almost exactly with this camp. I hope the American people understand what's coming next.
@rbreich Those really aren’t the same. Alligator Auschwitz isn’t the type of shelter, food, or medical care I’d want to give a homeless person. It’s inhumane.
@rbreich And it’s not even to do with money. The cruelty is the point.

@PaulNickson @rbreich

Men like Stephen Miller are directly profiting from this mass deportation campaign. So a private prison and private transportation sector.

@rbreich They are all wealty in comparison to the average America. It's disgusting to steal from the least to pad the pockets of those who don't NEED IT FFS!!

@LeelaTorres
@broadwaybabyto

It took just over a week to create a massive
concentration camp.

Remember this the next time those in power
claim they can't house the homeless, feed the
starving or provide medical care to the poor.

= =

They can, they don't want to.

@rbreich What they will do at some point: send the homeless and the poor to Alligator Alcatraz because that's what unempathetic evil does. They will always go a step further: First undocumented immigrants, then legal immigrants, LBGTQ+-floks, the disabled, the the poor and homeless, black people, women, until there are only a handful of white arseholes left who think they are the kings of the world. And when there is nobody left to hate they will expand.

@art_histories @rbreich

RFK jr was chatting up health camps for people with the moral deficiency of drug addiction or gender dysphoria.

@GhostOnTheHalfShell @rbreich Yes, easily to forget because of all the BS you are confronted with daily. Health camps for autistic and ADHD folks. They sure like 1930s Germany. It's ... Idk... our gouvernment is taking notes and tries to pull the same horrible things. The first court orders were already ignored.
@rbreich What's Alligator Alcatraz? Is it like Polar Bear Jail?
@alteNBnordpfalz @rbreich It's a concentration camp, intentionally built in a swampy region so escapees will die by alligator.
@rbreich Does the tiny print at the top mean this was actually a post by @broadwaybabyto? And instead of boosting the work of a disabled writer you took a screenshot and didn’t bother with alt text, making it *less accessible*?

@Cassandra
Pretty sure this Robert Reich person / bot doesn't care. I've never seen it interact at all, just post screen shots of its Bluesky account or some other stolen posts.

I think there must be multiples, because I seem to keep blocking this.

@rbreich @broadwaybabyto

@xinit Ah, yes, I scrolled back a week and didn't see any interaction at all. Gross. Thanks.
@Cassandra @xinit It's not a bot, this is the mastodon account of Robert Reich, former secretary of labor of the US under Bill Clinton. Proof it is him is him linking it from his website. I just think he uses it as a cross post account though, I've also never seen him react to anyone.
@GLaDTheresCake
well, I'd go so far as to accept "official bot" for now :)
@Cassandra

@GLaDTheresCake @Cassandra @xinit
His website links to a linktree, which links to all his socials, including Threads, Bluesky, and Mastodon. His website also links directly to a few profiles (Mastodon not included). Not linking directly means that any Mastodon profile verification won't work.

Funnily enough, some of his recent posts are posted on Threads and Bluesky as plain text, and posted here as images.

@dec23k

That last bit's the part that really confuses me. Wouldn't it be easier for the human or bot behind the posting to ... just post the text again rather than taking a screenshot and posting that?

@GLaDTheresCake @Cassandra

@xinit @GLaDTheresCake @Cassandra
It could be a staff member using a 3rd party "post everywhere" tool, but they decided that a rage bait soundbite quote rendered on a red background (with no alt text) is more appropriate for Fedi.

He also has a Spoutible account, still linked from the linktree, which is following zero other accounts. It hasn't made any new posts in more than a year.

But at least his linktree is not linking to a defunct G+ or Hyves profile.

@dec23k
Whatever the choices that lead them here, it's the sort of thing I just block at this point. I'm choosier with my bait these days.

@GLaDTheresCake @Cassandra

@xinit @GLaDTheresCake @Cassandra
I have a solid "no alt text, no boost" policy. If someone has replied to a toot and provided a good alt text, I'll boost that instead.
I don't follow Reich, but someone that I follow here posts links to his toots (usually with a comment added) every few days.
@dec23k
Yeah, I'm in the same boat - I follow a serial Reich booster, but they boost many actually good things, so I took the path of least pain ;)
@GLaDTheresCake @Cassandra
@xinit
The more I look at this, the worse it gets.
Screenshots of Bluesky posts, with some of them in dark mode and some of them in light mode, all of them with the date/time cropped out. Not even a "6 minutes ago".
@dec23k I thought I was imagining the dark/light mode thing. It's bizarre. Same for the unattributed posts from random accounts. Careless.
@rbreich a tent with cages. what do you think will happen in the first hurricane that hits

@rbreich It's a concentration camp. They won't be feeding anyone; at least not food they can or should actually eat. They'll also be using them for forced labor, and people are going to die there due to starvation, disease, and lack of proper sanitation, or even direct maltreatment.

That's hardly the same as "housing the homeless." At least not properly. Of course, there are always the prisons, the workhouses, and all other horrors funded by Gulag Scrooge.

@rbreich why do people keep spelling #AlligatorAuschwitz wrong?? I can't carry all this water myself.

@rbreich

Poverty is arranged. Poverty is built. Poverty is enforced.

Poverty is a shameful crime of the wealthy.
