VIEWS MINE | she/her/hers

I wrote this article about artificial intelligence and machine learning back in 2019. Surprisingly, the article is still relevant in our AI-obsessed culture.

Testing AI-based apps? Think like a human | TechBeacon

Testing software that includes AI, machine learning, and predictive analytics can become more sophisticated and robust if you think in human terms.

We're all friends here, so let's fight book banning.
Please Repost to get this to those who can use it.... Teens and young adults ages 13 to 26 living in the U.S. can access the entire collection of e-books and audiobooks from the Seattle Public Library. "We believe in your right to read what you want, discover yourself and form your own opinions." Fill out the form to get a Books Unbanned card.

Partially blind guy here with an #a11y PSA:

I'm seing a trend away from "Text Size" sliders or old fashioned font dialogs and towards a few set choices "Default", "Large","Larger", etc.

This is a HUGE step backwards. Your 'larger' is *never* large enough for my crazy busted eyeballs when I'm using my 34" monitor.

If you must do this, please be sure to add "Largest" and even "ZOMG ARE YOU SERIOUS LARGE" options. Some of us REALLY need them, even if it seems insane to you.

I keep seeing articles like "what an AI told us to do when we go to xxxxx" in the news, like nobody understands that that will regurgitate the most boring permutation of the most popular choices for doing that thing across the banal internet. Its like traveling by always picking only whatever the top thing is on TripAdvisor with absolutely everyone else, and never doing anything novel. Collective mediocrity is what LLMs have brought us.
@krisnelson @edutooter @edutooters Yes. We’d be fighting over a lot of things. But imagine national discourse on the purpose and progress of education that goes beyond stupid rankings of schools and comparisons of test scores to other countries!

It's important to know that a lot of the book ban horseshit going on right now is being driven by a vanishingly tiny number of people: *Eleven* people filed 60% of the 1000+ challenges the Washington Post reviewed.

It's taken me a while, but I've decided to start a Substack to share some of my thoughts and experiences about building tech communities. It is, and will remain, free to read.

Tech speakers, it's 2023. Stop using moms as your example of a non-technical audience. It's wrong, its not funny, and whatever you were saying, now most of your audience is not thinking about it.

Just use the exec team as an example instead and get on with your life.

So, the other "godfather" of AI, Turing Award Winner Yoshua Bengio has decided to FULLY align himself with the #TESCREAL bundle, writing a thing about "rogue AI" and prominently citing people like Nick Bostrom.

Take a good look at this text here. This is written by non other than Nick Bostrom, prominently featured by so many of these fathers and godfathers and sons and brothers and nephews of "AI" (given that its all men you know).
