I'm Alexandra, a writer of fiction and non-fiction. I help build I Write Like, a markdown text editor. I share news about it, although most of the time I talk about writing, science, and other things that catch my attention.

I'm a person of the mountains, meaning -- I spend a lot of time there, bringing back photos, thoughts, poetry and fairy tales. All of those I also intend to share here.

I'm new. I'm excited. I'm still learning.

I wrote a blog post, about the arduous joy of learning new things.

I've just heard an opinion that stories written by a highly skilled author differ in voice: professional author is unseen on the pages and only the characters are heard. Such authors sound different from book to book. As a reader, I wouldn't want to follow their work. I read Vonnegut because I want to hear his ideas. I read Hemingway because I trust his prose won't be fluffy. This is why you love some authors and not others, right?

Well, what do you know. The first digital rewrite of the handwritten draft obliterated Daniel Defoe from the results. The subsequent tweaking and polishing washed my boat up on the ever familiar shore -- Ursula K. Le Guin. I guess this is the writing gait of my mind.

Typed my new draft into IWL and ran it through the analyzer. Well, this one is new... Not the part about Ursula K. Le Guin, no -- I almost always get Le Guin. But Daniel Defoe is truly unexpected. The power of longhand drafting 😅

After yesterday's chaotic search through digital folders, only to find the draft I was looking for handwritten in a notebook, I've returned to longhand drafting. This way, my brain creates using its parts that otherwise hide from the screen glare. It's like another version of me takes over. The story also comes more easily. I've written two drafts of a new story in a couple of hours. A special heatwave bonus: no laptop roasts me while I think.

Facing another week. Uncertainty looms about my employment.

I haven’t had a single interview, much less offer. It’s been weeks, and I’ve tried to fill out any application I qualify for or think I could possibly drive to, which around here means lots of traffic and time spent in a car, which I don’t love.

But I need a job. I just don’t know what we are going to do if I don’t find one. Trying not to despair, and to focus on what needs doing today, but that is so difficult.

May your Monday be better.

Anyway, how is your Saturday going?
