Spring is in the air in the #Mojave! I happened to capture this image of a mating pair of Mojave desert #tortoises (#Gopherus #agassizii) last weekend during a #drone survey - a first! That's an active burrow to the left.

A friendly reminder that when you’re swimming in the open ocean and it LOOKS empty, you’re actually totally surrounded. Brought to you by the giant open-ocean amphipod Cystisoma. Video by Alejandro Damian-Serrano.

This is what a Mojave desert #tortoise (#Gopherus agassizii) looks like from 20 meters in the air. Imagine that there are 50-100 tortoises in 1,000,000 of these images and you have to find them all. That's what a #drone tortoise survey is.

Do you have many hours of audio data? Do simple call detection algorithms not work well enough? Don’t despair, after more than three years of development Animal-SPOT is here! Published in Scientific Reports: https://doi.org/10.1038/s41598-022-26429-y. All code and example data is publicly available. You can train your own network and detect vocalisations of anything from cod to whale and bat to parrot. #MachineLearning #Bioacoustics #DeepLearning

One of the things that concerns me about climate change… We sometimes fall for the most attractive narrative about how the world changes, not the one supported by evidence.

It’s so easy to love narratives about how tech / charismatic leaders / activists / politicians / nature / ranchers / etc will single-handedly stop climate change.

But what if the answer is a mix of things, many of which aren’t sexy, moving forward inch-by-inch? “The strong and slow boring of hard boards”, as they say.

Our new lab PPE has arrived. And it looks SICK!

We will need to use snowmobiles to access our remote field sites during the winter for our #moose #acoustic study. I also get to tag along with collaborators hoping to use #drones to survey moose.

Fun fact--did you know a single moose can host up to 90,000 ticks? Read more about why moose are at risk and the project here: https://indepthnh.org/2022/06/06/state-to-study-moose-numbers-using-drones/

State To Study Moose Numbers Using Drones - InDepthNH.org

The state's moose population will be observed by drones and 140 cameras in the woods in the next few years to help determine their population numbers and better understand their health, which is being stressed by climate.

Hi, everyone! I'm Matt Bandy. I am mainly focused on developing #drone and #AI #computervision survey methods for #wildlife and #plants. I'm currently in the weeds with #tortoise surveys and #distancesampling, but I also am working with #saguaros, #joshuatrees, and #avianmortality. I'd like to do more with #bioacoustics.

Most of this work is in support of #renewableenergy development in the western United States.
