When we lived in Arizona we were fortunate enough to have a captive Sonoran Desert tortoise as a part of our family. We were approved to adopt her after meeting the strict requirements of the Arizona Game and Fish Department.

While it is illegal to capture or interfere with wild tortoises in Arizona, once they are in captivity, they cannot be release back into the wild as they are likely to spread disease to the rest of the wild tortoise population. AZGF relies on citizen adoptions to care for the animals that come into their facilities.

We named her Palmer, a play on the fact that she fit in the palm of your hand. But, ended up mostly calling her 'the cheeseburger' because they also fit in the palm of your hand.

She lived happily for a while in our courtyard where I put up a sign about her. Later we moved her to an enclosure I built in the backyard with a water fountain and lots of holes for her to play hide-n-seek in.

She would come inside occasionally for a bath and for a few months in the winter for her annual brumation. She has a passion for prickly pear fruit upon which she would gorge herself when they were in season. Leaving her beak stained a fashionable purple for weeks. Very chic.

When we left Arizona, our neighbor, a kindly rancher with a herd of sheep, a few goats, and a flock of chickens, agreed to take her in. We built a suitable enclosure for her in his backyard and he occasionally sends me updates on her wellbeing.

She's a gem and will outlive us all.
