I learn a lot of little things about 3D level design as I keep building worlds for my game. Today for example, I wasn't sure how to put a more lush and green area next to this very arid, rocky spot. Sure, I could put a bunch of thought into how to blend the two different environments in a convincing way...or I could stick a tunnel in there and slap some green vertex coloring in it to transition a little more smoothly.
The screenshot isn't doing it any justice since I haven't even modeled the new area yet, but I'm including it for the sake of explaining what I mean.
There's just so much to learn about how to do this stuff, but it's pretty much impossible to find resources out there that talk about it. Probably because it's obvious or boring, but sometimes I like to imagine what it would be like to be a fly on the wall at Rare or something when those old 3D worlds were first being made, just to see the process.
