Progressive reckons for progressive people. Based in Island Bay, Wellington, New Zealand home of the mighty Island Bay Cycleway 🚴‍

Great article! I share Geordie’s vision for Island Bay - a connected, resilient community & thriving businesses enabled by greater housing density, light rail to the city, improved public spaces & protected cycleways to Berhampore, Newtown & beyond

My Wellington: Imagining a new Island Bay

Geordie Rogers imagines Island Bay moving in a new direction. The rental advocate can even see himself living there long term. If only his landlord will let him stay.

“…voters have time & again reelected the mayors responsible for ambitious road reclamations, often with overwhelming majorities. Although many presume these policies are toxic, projects that make cities more liveable have been shown to be good urban policy AND good politics.”

@Julie @misswhanau for sure & it also shows how careful council has to be when receiving feedback that purports to be from ‘the local business community’ when a few loud voices tend to dominate. I already pointed out on the other app that one of those reps is a long standing cycleway opponent who only bought their business on The Parade in Feb 2022 so knows the whole backstory plus what was already planned & agreed & still chose to invest their money. Hypocritical to keep complaining imho.
@misswhanau @Julie yeah, was good. Thought Sarah Free chaired that one pretty well too. The 2 failed council candidates turning up in public participation to moan to the councillors who *actually got elected* about not listening to the community was also pretty funny
Three excellent WCC decisions from Wednesday: Ngaio and Aro bike lanes will go ahead, as will the village upgrade for Island Bay, which fills the gap in the bike lane there. https://www.stuff.co.nz/dominion-post/wellington-top-stories/130765164/ngaio-aro-valley-next-in-wellingtons-citywide-network-of-bike-lanes
Ngaio, Aro Valley next in Wellington's citywide network of bike lanes

In one of the year's final meetings, the Wellington City Council pushes forward to create what it hopes will be more sustainable and attractive streets.
