It sounds like a win to me. But hey, I do not really own #Netflix and their #stock is mysteriously rising today, so I must be missing something. (end) #marketing #tv #streaming #pricing #internet #series #movies
The current premium tier (18€) would still be in place for those who are not willing to share (but want premium feature such as #HDR and #4K ) and for those who really share with their household (it would be much less painful and costly to verify for that).
For each existing shared account, or for many of them, #Netflix would get 40% more while keeping all the rest (and costs) almost unchanged. (8/n)
Let's say the new tier is at 25 €=it's about a 40% increase from today (!). Still, it's 6,25€ each if 4 people are sharing.
This way remaining on #Netflix and sharing your #password would cost an additional 1,75€ instead of an additional 13,5€ .
The *marginal cost* of keeping a subscription would likely stay within a VERY acceptable range.

In brief, the #passwordsharing crackdown is at high risk of failure and #Netflix could loose subscribers and money. Is there a better solution? Maybe there is.
For instance, Netflix could offer an additional tier that will allow password sharing for 3-4 people regardless of location. Let's do the math. (6/n)
Additional problem: a widespread address verification procedure will likely add costs for the infrastructure, customer service etc. and also alienate many existing customers who are just frequent travelers or are legitimately sharing accounts in their household. (5/n)
By turning a blind eye to password sharing, Netflix has created a larger viewer base. Many are people who would not buy a subscription at full price- considering the amount of competing platform around and the option of easily (although illegally) downloading a series you like. (4/n)
Indeed, password sharing accounts for an *apparent* loss of over 6 billion dollars/year for Netflix. Please note: *apparent*.
In theory the move is rightful. In practice, it will work only if the new subscribers who can't live without my service are more than the ones who are not willing to go from the shared to the full price. How many will go from 4,5€ to 18€? How many will choose a competitor? How many will quit?
Those 6 billion dollars is an *apparent loss*. (3/n)
