Secretary Hegseth made a confusing statement today: "You can't have a nuclear bomb… we precisely took it away. And then even after that, they didn't have that. They didn't come to the table with a willingness to give it away."

The logical inconsistency is striking. If a nuclear capability was "precisely taken away," then it no longer exists to be given away at a negotiating table. This kind of rhetorical confusion around nuclear weapons—where clarity is paramount—creates unnecessary ambiguity about strategic realities and policy objectives.

One proven tactic: share background context before asking for a decision. If you explain industry shifts before proposing a budget change, people grasp the “why” faster.

Wrote about poor decision-making and a sloppy feasibility study for a proposed #SMR in a small Dutch municipality. I was clear it wasn’t anti-nuclear or anti-SMR. Yet some anti-nuclear readers now assume I’m on their side. Typical: the more ideological people are, the harder it seems for them to distinguish substance from process. I had a similar argument about #strategiccommunication and #XR. https://rzondervan.eu/notes032025/ My text from yesterday on SMR is on proces! https://rzondervan.eu/prutsen-in-de-polder-met-een-smr/
Notes #3/2025: Mocking XR is easy but protest strategy still matters, and local politics even more.

New in International Affairs (w Alicia Fjällhed): “Public Diplomacy in the Crossfire: Decoding Ukraine’s ‘Strategic Self’ During Wartime.”

We introduce the Strategic Self — a framework explaining how states communicate under pressure:
🌍 Projecting Self → resilience, values, solidarity
⚔️ Distancing Self → exposing aggression, mobilising outrage

Effectiveness = adaptive balance + narrative restraint.

Avoid these mistakes:
Using jargon. Keep it simple.
Sending the same message to everyone. Customize for each group.

After meetings, note which points got the best response. Use that to improve your next conversation.
