Use #Python at all? I would like to do a silly thing, which I hope will bring amusement to others as well as me (if it works out).

If you wouldn't mind, please fill out this form, and boost for reach:

Informal Pointless Python Survey

This is an informal, unscientific survey of (sort of) Python questions, with which I'd like to try to make something amusing, maybe something involving families feuding somehow. (I may have been inspired by https://www.theincomparable.com/gameshow/feud/.) Whether it works depends partly on how many and what kind of answers people give. There is intentionally no rigor to these questions. The vagueness is on purpose. Answer with the first thing that comes to mind. Don't try to over-think it, the point isn't to get the "right" answers. If you really don't know how to answer a question it's okay to leave it blank, but it's more fun if you try to answer anyway. I promise not to ridicule any individual answers, so don't hold back! I will clean up responses, remove any identifying data, and not tie anything to individuals in any way. After I'm done with the responses (which may take a while), I'll post the aggregated, cleaned-up set for other people to enjoy.

Consider your phrasing and words carefully; for example, calling a task "easy" can make people feel judged if it's not for them, while "straightforward" instead tells them it's intended to be clearly outlined, so they can suggest improvements to the process instead of feeling like they've failed if it's not. - @kattni at #nbpy

well… did most of that, except genocides (and not exactly weapons, but military training software - bad enough in my books)

would add "work on finance bullshit" right after ads
@dat @itsthejoker If it was used by the US or Israeli military, then yeah it ended up helping facilitate a genocide
@dat @itsthejoker German military also supplies 30% of Israeli weapons, so people in their military industry are also complicit in genocide

@maros @dat @itsthejoker

The Germans are compensating for one genocide by helping another? I think they learned the wrong lesson.

@Phosphenes @dat @itsthejoker
Denazification never really happened, much like Reconstruction failed in the US. The Nazi Industrialists were handed control of industry after the war in West Germany, while being allowed to keep everything that they stole from Jewish families, minorities, and everyone else. Not surprising that their post-war ruling class directed their industry and society to the same place.
@Phosphenes @dat @itsthejoker You could also say the same about Zionists. To that end, I'd say it's clear the incentives of colonialism are stronger than the memory of a genocide.
@maros @itsthejoker nah, we only supported arabic and english language, not hebrew

So it's fine‽ /s
@itsthejoker this is why I make fences and gates for a living now, after 35 years as a software engineer.
@hoco living the dream 🥲

@henrycatalinismith I'll be honest, I don't make nearly as much money. But, I sleep well. My body is stronger than it has ever been during my life. All the things that hurt when I sat for 10+ hours/day no longer hurt: feet, back, neck, shoulders. None of it hurts now. I work outside and I have extraordinary battery-powered tools from Milwaukee. My life is low stress and I don't do any marketing. All of my work comes by referral. I know not everyone can make a change to skilled trades. That is part of why I did.

In case you are curious, this is my fence business: https://timefold.com/fences

Microsoft employees protest at 50th anniversary party over Israel contract

A pro-Palestinian protest by Microsoft employees interrupted the company’s 50th anniversary celebration Friday, the latest backlash over the tech industry’s work to supply artificial intelligence technology to the Israeli military. The first protest happened as Microsoft AI CEO Mustafa Suleyman was presenting product updates and a long-term vision for the company’s AI assistant product, Copilot, to an audience that included Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates and former CEO Steve Ballmer. It follows a February protest that led Microsoft to eject five employees from a meeting with the company’s CEO Satya Nadella.

@evan @itsthejoker @Korallenherz The most prominent current genocide is indeed the one being perpetrated by israel on the palestian occupied population.

@itsthejoker I once walked away from a temp job on the first day when I noticed what the company did was make nuclear weapons.
@irina @itsthejoker well, I once offered my employer to work for a nuclear weapons manufacturer, if it would get me away from working for a tobacco company. At least nuke company doesn't allow smoking on site. Not that I actually would, but that is how much I didn't want to do work for big tobacco.

Arson, Murder, and Jaywalking - TV Tropes

When listing three or more things, the comedy rule is to not finish strong, but to list some strong examples followed by a very weak example, for the funny. Sometimes this will stick to the Rule of Three, but sometimes a proper Long List will …

@itsthejoker This is why I run a maker space now, after 30 years of data management.
@itsthejoker I don't know if you know, but first and third play awfully well together.

@itsthejoker

Exactly the reasons I do science now.

@itsthejoker Add corporate surveillance and continued use of fossil fuels and subsidizing evil ideas like fossil fuels, tobacco and defense contractor subsidizes to your list and we have a good list
@itsthejoker I love that there are also two people in the frame who wear masks 👍🙌
@itsthejoker “Sorry, Teams comes with Office and we already hate you enough to make you use *that* so what’s a little more?”
@itsthejoker I suppose “Make the world worse” can do a lot of lifting here: AI, cryptocurrency, finance, Jira…
@itsthejoker I would add "work on cryptocurrency" and "work on AI" but that might fall under "make the world worse."
@itsthejoker reverse the order and I'm in!
@itsthejoker Microsoft, not only "teams" app
@itsthejoker This is me, actually. And the reason I have to quit my current position.
@itsthejoker there's a reason I am unemployed instead of making bank at Palantir despite an offer, and I have not regretted it for one fucking instant
@itsthejoker Doesn't leave a whole lot of IT, now does it? 😥

@itsthejoker Or any Micro$oft. M$ enables fascism and police states… This also applies to other companies as well.

Plus, US proriertary software companies licensing fees are not only crazy expensive… They're so full of stupid restrictions there's a huge legal risk: Orgs using those end paying ginournous penalty fees for "license violations"'

Proprietary software enables "legal" racket at a huge scale, and US companies are the world's worst offenders when it comes to bad faith and stupid EULAs

@itsthejoker the urgent need to use this as a linkedIn header…

@itsthejoker Seriously, back in the late 1990s when I was an SGML/XML consultant, I told my then employer that I wasn't willing to work on documentation for weapons systems, and they respected that (even though those military contracts made up a huge portion of the available work at the time).

Fortunately, I got to work on a doc system for McDonnell-Douglas (later, Boeing) civilian airliners instead, and the consulting company did very well out of that, so win-win.

@itsthejoker the bar is on the floor, and yet -
@itsthejoker I'm considering adding this as a "bio" in my LinkedIn profile 🤔
@itsthejoker Yep, basically that. Maybe I'd add: Or any other Microsoft product. Or anything Google. Or Meta.
@itsthejoker Hmm, there are not many real Alternatives to MS Teams for large scale collaboration 🤔 What do you use?
