The book tackles some of the most burning questions of our time—what happens ir the nuclear arms race is not stopped? Is it possible to secure world peace? Is the scrapping of nuclear arms a short cut to another world war?

Written by a Marxist who has embraced the new thinking, the book offers the Soviet view of what is needed to assure human survival. The rendering is a tangible result of glasnost, that all-important component of perestroika.

The author’s easy style will be sure to attract people who are not necessarily experts in philosophy. Vladimir Ivanov (b. 1957), researcher of the Moscow Institute of Philosophy, a division of the USSR Academy of Sciences, is a leading specialist in the philisophy of history and politics, and has devoted himself to the evolution of the new thinking.
