I front @hearsepileup

Tech-hed, dev, tinkerer. Interested in decentralisation. As in *real* decentralisation, not massively distributed centralised database web3 stuff.

On a quest to re-engage with my inner musician and artist.

I don't know about you, but 2025 is the year of the linux desktop for me. Am going to be using Linux Mint as my primary OS for computing this year. The #SteamDeck and James Lee were the final clinchers that it's time to make the jump. This video really convinced me that it's time:

I'm enjoying DaVinci Resolve so far, and honestly all my games are running better on Linux than they ever did on windows.

@cstross That guy has more food for thought:

@gaffen I would go one further. The *web* does not need to be Turing complete, nor does it need to support e-commerce. That is why we have operating systems, relational databases and GUI clients.

All of that existed and worked via TCP/IP *before* Java, JavaScript, and Windows 95! Those are what you get when capitalists co-opt a public good like the World Wide Web and the visions of Tim Berners-Lee, Ted Nelson and Vannevar Bush.

Fedi hivemind this is a call for help - I've recently switched to #GamingOnLinux and have found most of my games run better than they did on win. I'm using the #mesa drivers for my #amd rx580, however I'm having serious issues with #RDR2. The benchmark immediately freezes and then crashes my x server. I've seen talk online that the amdpro drivers for #vulkan might be more stable for gaming but I could do with some feedback from people who do this a lot. On win I could get the benchmark to run but I could never finish it because of driver timeouts. Any advice the the optimum gaming setup with my current hardware, or is it simply time to replace my graphics card?

@gamingonlinux, would you mind giving this a boost for visibility too? Or maybe you have some advice yourself?

I'm really enjoying 2025 being my personal year of the Linux desktop so far though 😆

Boosts encouraged and appreciated!

THEY DID IT!!!!

My local library built the seed library!

The local Master Gardeners provided a lot of the intitial seeds (oh my gosh we are stocked!!!). They used an old card catalogue to store them. Today's the kickoff!

The idea is you "check out seeds" from the library, plant/grow/harvest, let some go to seed, then "return the seeds" back to the library!

Free seeds for everyone!

Surprise, surprise: In a system that conflates intelligence with profit, Microsoft thinks artificial general intelligence is what you get when you have $100B in profits.

(Yes, you read that right. Yes, it’s absolute nonsense. But then again, so is capitalism in general. Sadly, it’s not harmless nonsense but a death cult.)

“Microsoft and OpenAI have a very specific, internal definition of artificial general intelligence (AGI) based on the startup’s profits, according to a new report from The Information. And by this definition, OpenAI is many years away from reaching it.

The two companies reportedly signed an agreement last year stating OpenAI has only achieved AGI when it develops AI systems that can generate at least $100 billion in profits.”
