An excellent start to Annual Melissa Day. I am truly spoiled. 🥰🥳

At 4️⃣7️⃣, I’ve never been older, but I currently feel younger than any point in the past two years and I’m ready to CELEBRATE!!

(Also I’m late with my traditional Birthday Sewing but I’ll post when it’s done)

@girlonthenet yayyy!! Have a fucking BLAST on your epic adventure! 😝
I've been thinking a lot about what a friend pointed out - that mixed gendered spaces often quickly become male-exclusive because men tend to have much higher tolerance for arsehole behaviour than women, so it only takes one dodgy person to destroy a community as all the women basically leave. Once such a community has heavy male bias it can hardly recover, and its lack of representation means it can hardly succeed in any social, cultural or technical aims. Rings true for the extraordinarily bad gender balance in free/open source software in the context of the Stallman report.

The new mayor of #Paris, Emmanuel Grégoire, celebrated his victory last night by riding to city hall on a Vélib' bikeshare bicycle.

He's promised 60,000 new social housing units 15 express bus routes, 1000 new pedestrian streets, completion of bike path network...

Sums up my experience growing up
Deploying the poorly-vetted, untrained, violent, unaccountable mob we call ICE to airports is hilarious. You want guns lost in the secure area? This will accomplish that. You want people running or driving across taxiways and runways? This will do it. ICE agents are the biggest group of serial fuck ups I have ever seen.

Also, and I want to say more on this soon, but if you think that the big AI players are hoping for *anything but* them being able to put a legislative moat around themselves where output *is* copyrighted and training materials *are* restricted but they're the *only ones* able to play, you're being a fool.

Their key goal is to capture rent on all intellectual pursuits.

It really bums me out that I keep seeing blog posts from technical people like "putting aside the obvious moral and ethical implications of LLMs, I'm interested in evaluating whether they can be useful for my work."

Like "putting aside the obvious moral and ethical concerns of breaking into my neighbours' houses, I'm interested in evaluating whether this can be useful for acquiring other people's valuables."
