Absolutely flabbergasted at Last.fm finally being independent again after two decades of neglect by CBS. Incredibly exciting.

@jonty r u sure it's just the one decade?
@jonty oh, interesting…I may consider going back to a Pro subscription in that case.

@jonty

"but the product you use everyday has not changed"

"everyday"

I remembered my profile name and there I have my most recently scrobbled track: it was late 2014.

@jonty I'm glad scrobbles will stay the same (has no idea what the fuck a scrobble is)
@elexia @jonty I remember when it was called audioscrobbler and did not have its current terrible latency on the website ahaha
@elexia @jonty We all attached our Amarok 1.4 to last.fm and scrobbled our plays there. Then we could see great stats and stuff.
Well, many other audio players could be linked, too.
@jonty maybe i'm conflating several different entities, but wasnt there a CBS broadcasting that was ceasing operations recently, or is this a different CBS parent company?
@Luissen @jonty apparently the CBS. Like Paramount+ CBS.
@Luissen @jonty CBS News ended radio broadcasting recently. Same parent company, different division.
@jonty streaming coming back wen? We need Norman back on the radio because the playlists were the best in the world. Shame that nostalgia is so dangerous because I would love to be in the ooops room again. Good job it was demolished I guess.
@cat GIVE ME BACK RADIOQL
@jonty @cat RadioQL was a C++ fever dream, but I loved every bit of it! :D
@jonty oh wow! they were my first streaming service and introduction to MusicBrainz before the platform enshitified. Here's hoping to bring back the old charm i guess šŸ¤ž
@jonty did they employees buy it out? Did the founders?
@dlx As yet unclear. Possibly management. Definitely not the founders.
@jonty HUH? šŸ‘€ Oh wow.
@jonty Oh good, wonder if this means we'll get last.fm streaming again. I loved it when it was halfway between YouTube Music and Bandcamp.
@BalooUriza That radio was amazing.
@sharan It definitely had the propensity of being the online equivalent of the Tulsa International Airport jukebox
@sharan @BalooUriza Their upcoming concert stuff was the best. Then they managed to break it for some utterly bizarre reason.
@jonty That can go either great or sideways, depending on who has actually bought itā€¦šŸ¤”
@ssamulczyk They said it's independent. Maybe they bought themselves.
@jonty I'm cautiously optimistic, depending on how they move in the next couple months I'm thinking about resubscribing to pro.
@jonty that's exciting! Hopefully they'll be able to stick around on their own
@jonty if it's not going fully open-sourced and decentralized, don't care anymore
@jonty not sure what last.fm does but im connected now!
@SnakeOilSalesman @jonty How else are you going to show the world that you’ve listened to The Monkees nearly 12,000 times? šŸ˜„ #LastFM #TheMonkees
@Galley @jonty i've got some catching up to do!
@jonty That's interesting - I was an early adopter and really liked Last.fm, and then they did something (might even have been "got bought out by arseholes") that made me leave the platform. Now I'm wondering if I might move back.
@jonty shared with work people. Then realised I had to explain why Last.FM was significant. (Last.FM was, in part, responsible for the uptick in services like CDDB and MusicBrainz, which in turn gave teams like Spotify their headstart to build a recommendation engine). I decided not to invoke Libre.fm on the grounds they already think I'm a Free Software nerd šŸ˜‚
@JonTheNiceGuy (I was one of the early last.fm staff, I am quite aware šŸ˜†)

@jonty oh no, that was what I told people, I was hoping for someone to correct me so I had enough time to fix the message before people started coming into work šŸ˜‰

On the "you worked at Last.FM" front. Thanks for making such a big part of my late teens, early-to-mid twentys!

@jonty hey now ... that's pretty swanky.

@jonty

scrobles. Back when we just would dream whole new vocabulary

@jonty

This defies all laws of enshittification.

I will probably sign up.

@jonty I had been scrobbling on Libre.fm for a long time, but it really just wasn't the same...so I stopped altogether.  Now, maybe, I'll start using last.fm again...
@jonty I just deleted my account.  They will not let you disable any trackers or any of their garbage selling your information to third parties.  F-off with that garbage.
@jonty Last.fm used to be my number one favourite place on the internet, if they just bring a tiny fraction of its former glory back, I'll sign up again.
@jonty Oh, this is nice! I used it way, way back and recently thought it would be nice to have something similar again and went with #ListenBrainz ( https://listenbrainz.org/ ) which is really nice (once you find a player that actually works with it reliably, I went with #Supersonic ( https://github.com/dweymouth/supersonic/ ) connected to my local #Navidrome instance, can recommend).
ListenBrainz

Track, explore, visualise and share the music you listen to. Follow your favourites and discover great new music.

@jonty woahhhh. audioscrobblers rejoice!
@jonty Long live audioscrobbler! (My username there is ā€˜Kim’.)
@jonty i didn’t realize it was still alive
@jonty I hope it is good news. Could also mean more enshittification.
@jonty I don’t know if this brings me closer or farther from my fear of losing 22 years of listening data — but that’s very awesome to hear!
