I teach a class together with 6 graduate striking workers. Today, I was informed that if I do not pick up their struck labor (as in, somehow, come up with a way to grade what those other 6 workers normally would) I will be violating the faculty code of conduct, because withholding grades while pursuing other faculty duties (service, research) is a violation, and this might result in the University withholding my compensation.
Am I really being forced to work for 6 people *or fabricate grades* if I want to get paid? Even if I weren't withholding grades in solidarity, there is no way I could perform these highly unethical tasks.

“Three ecologists, an architect, an urban forester, a water engineer, two geographers and a planner walk into a bar…”
This was a really fun project to work on, but also highlights the complexity of integrating #naturebasedsolutions into #urbanPlanning!
Finding space for urban greening is as difficult as it is urgent. However, one area where we have been very generous with space in cities is car parking. This study shows that if we can use car parking space more efficiently, we can free up large areas for urban nature.
for #thicktrunktuesday (and #mosstodon) I submit this tree I saw in new hope, PA, without which I may not have learned that “edaphoecotropism” is the term for when a tree “eats” an object

Scenic Hudson Land Stewardship Coordinator Dan Smith photographed an ice skate being “eaten” by a tree on one of our protected properties in Ulster County. The skate was probably abandoned alongside the tree a number of years ago. Over time, as the tree grew, the wood surrounded the blade, placing a tight grip on it. […]
New OA science hot off the press!📢
Lead by @thamicroeser from RMIT's ICON Science, here's a novel, interdisciplinary assessment of the potential urban biodiversity & sustainability gains when we convert street parking into spaces for people & nature.

Nature-based solutions (NBS) are recognised as a means to address challenges such as heatwaves, flooding and biodiversity loss. Delivering these benefits at scale will require large areas of scarce urban land to be converted into green space. Here we show an approach by which cities can make substantial progress towards their sustainability targets using NBS, by converting redundant street parking into biodiverse green space. We demonstrate that up to half of street parking in our case study municipality (The City of Melbourne) could be accommodated in garages within 200 m, freeing up large areas for greening. Our modelling projects significant benefits in terms of tree canopy over, stormwater and ecological connectivity. These would represent strong progress towards a number of the city’s ambitious NBS targets. As many cities allocate extensive areas to both street parking and off-street garages, this approach to freeing up space for nature in cities is widely applicable.
I'm a senior researcher on a new program in #AIEthics and #DataEthics at #NortheasternUniversity that I am now allowed to talk about:
This is an #NSF funded program that will let us bring in cohorts of approximately 10 #philosophy (or related) graduate students to #Boston for 10 weeks for each of the next 3 years (beginning #2023) to get training in #AIEthics and #DataEthics from our faculty and visiting scholars.
Here's a link to the program website. Please boost! https://cssh.northeastern.edu/ethics/summer-grad-training-program/
This summer school is intended for graduate students with advanced training in applied ethics, ethical theory, philosophy of science, or other areas with potential research applications to AI and big data who would like to develop research capacities in the ethics of artificial intelligence (AI), data ethics, and the philosophy of technology. Designing AI and […]
