I will be giving a keynote at both Blue Team Con and WWHF about lessons I have learned in a decade of mentoring job seekers and career changers in cybersecurity, but here is one tip for free right now - never give greatly more to a company than they generally return to you. If they pay you to do a job, do a good job at it. Have integrity! But don't go overboard in perpetual overtime or free work, missing time with family, losing your health in a way they would never commit to you - most organizations today in the US will lay you off and replace you in a moment. If you die, they will replace you.
If they go above and beyond for you in real, meaningful ways, return that loyalty and commitment in kind. But never gratuitously more. You only live one life, and your job is not your family. It is a contract for labor, and if you are lucky one you learn from and somewhat enjoy.

There is one legitimate reason to have attended the meeting of fediverse admins with Facebook/Meta and thatâs if your goal was to leak the contents.

Personally, I donât see how I can trust any fediverse admin either stupid enough or malleable enough to sign an NDA with Facebook/Meta.
No one made you sign an NDA with a surveillance capitalist that this space stands in diametric opposition to. You did that to yourselves. Donât be surprised if there are consequences.
(And maybe some of you will now see why Iâm designing the Small Web as a peer-to-peer web. Why ensuring that every node â every instance â is equal is essential to any system that wants to resist centralisation and corporate capture. Why if these places are extensions of ourselves, we must own and control them ourselves. Itâs the difference between being a person and not a person in the digital age. Itâs high time we understood this.)

I started on the Fediverse with Mastodon about seven years ago when I had ~42K followers on Twitter and zero here.
Personally, I donât care how many followers I lose. My tiny, ineffectual, instance of one will defederate with any instance, no matter how large, if this rumour is true.
If this comes to pass, Iâd urge those of you on the instances that become Metaâs lackeys to move to instances that are not if youâd like us to stay in touch.
Remember, itâs about quality not quantity. Always.

Any instance that goes along with such a thing will be lost to surveillance capitalism. I donât care how large they are or who they are, any instance that becomes Metaâs bitch should be defederated immediately by all others. Let the largest few get swallowed up whole by Silicon Valley if theyâre dumb enough to do it. The rest of us will rebuild.

Itâs very interesting to see who in the fediverse is falling in line behind Silicon Valley and Big Tech and who is not.
And no, we canât all just get along.
Big Tech is the antithesis of the cooperative and humanitarian values of federation and decentralisation. You can either be an apologist for surveillance capitalists or support the nascent ethical alternatives to their toxic business model thatâs detrimental to human rights and democracy.
Pick a side. History will remember your choice.
