Not sure if people outside the Chicago area are aware of this, but the Chicago Sun-Times is a non-profit news organization, and they have removed their paywall. The Sun-Times is part of Chicago Public Media, which also includes WBEZ, the Chicago affiliate of National Public Radio (NPR.) They do require an email address to open a free account with access to the news stories.
