I got an Intel mini at work just before the M1s came out and then an M1 MBAir for home use. I have noticed the latter runs circles around the former, even with Rosetta emulating Intel. My main reason for buying the M1 was that I liked the fanless (and therefore noiseless) design and saw it as a good fit for home recordings on my multichannel mixer, but have been quite impressed with its overall performance.
that’s ridiculous they haven’t added apple silicon support yet. literally every app on my Mac has native support by now. with the money adobe rakes in there’s no excuse for them.

Should we be using hashtags and mentions more?

I imagine many of us are here from reddit, where hashtags weren't really a thing and in many places mentions were actively discouraged (/r/politics I'm looking at you). However, since everything we post or comment on kbin (and lemmy) has the potential of getting federated on a mastodon server, which leans heavily on hashtags and... #hashtags #kbinMeta

A new Gulag is being created in Russia and on the territory of occupied Ukraine

Thousands of Ukraine civilians are being held in Russian prisons. Russia plans to build many more

Thousands of Ukrainian civilians are being detained across Russia and the Ukrainian territories it occupies, in centers ranging from brand-new wings in Russian prisons to clammy basements. Most have no status under Russian law. An Associated Press investigation also found that Russia is making plans to hold potentially thousands more. A Russian government document obtained by the AP dating to January outlined plans to create 25 new prison colonies and six other detention centers in occupied Ukraine by 2026. In addition, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a decree in May that would make it easier for Russia to deport Ukrainians who resist Russian occupation deep into Russia indefinitely, which has already happened in multiple cases documented by the AP.

Mastodon is really starting to build a solid #News #USPolitics and #Legal analysis sector. Some who've been missing for a while are back, and others who've been here the whole time are in full stride:

If you’re looking for news, follow some of the accounts here, and there’s a spreadsheet of journalists on mastodon here.

Don’t rely on trending hashtags, it’s not a useful feature on mastodon.

Search on hashtags. That alone gave me loads of useful and interesting content (to the point I had to make lists to separate them out into columns). Also look for community aggregation accounts. That’s a bot account that automatically boosts any post that mentions it. So if you’re interested in, say, progrock and there’s a @[email protected] community aggregation account, every time you post something on progressive rock, you mention @[email protected] and your post is seen by everybody who subscribes to @[email protected].

There have been a lot of creative ways people have come up with to make finding content easy. Start with the hashtags and you’ll find the aggregation accounts in no time.

I have learned more in the few weeks about self hosting, rust, flutter and other things in lemmy, mastodon and fediverse than in the last few years in Reddit and other social media. Maybe learned more in hacker news. It’s awesome here and love the people here who are wonderful and knowledgeable and teach me patiently without any prejudice. Thanks everyone who make this awesome place.
