One sentence horror story:
I thought I was on mute.
Eight hundred workers near Toronto have won the first Walmart warehouse union in Canada or the U.S. “Honestly I was pretty nervous at first because I didn’t want to lose my job,” said 29-year employee Rodolfo Pilozo, a member of “Team Red,” the organizing committee behind the September victory. The Walmart distribution center is in Mississauga, Ontario, an hour from the western New York border. Workers there began organizing last December to join Unifor, Canada’s largest private-sector union. Forty percent signed union cards over the summer.
I’m looking for a software engineer to join my team at the Internet Archive. We work mostly Pacific hours but are fully and forever remote (we do have a lovely SF HQ if you're in the neighborhood). Our department uses Python, Django, Temporal.io, Postgres, and some in-house database technologies to build web archiving and other digital preservation services for over 1000 partner cultural heritage and memory institutions.
Software Engineer, Archiving & Data Services (Remote) Interested in a mission-driven job ensuring open access to information for a global audience? Enjoy building technologies and products critical to thousands of libraries, non-profits, cultural heritage, and educational organizations worldwide? Internet Archive is seeking a Software Engineer for its Archiving & Data Services group. Internet Archive is a non-profit digital library, top 200 website at archive.org, and an archive of over 100 petabytes of digital information running in many self-owned and operated data centers. Internet Archive also provides mission-aligned services to thousands of organizations worldwide, working collaboratively to advance our goal of “Universal Access to All Knowledge.” We are seeking a Software Engineer to work in our 12 person engineering team and help grow the Archiving & Data Services group’s suite of digital archiving, data, and access services for a global set of partner research, memory, and social good organizations. All engineering roles will work closely with product, program, and operations staff to engage in the full software development lifecycle. Preliminary duties of the role will primarily focus on developing Archive-It, our web archiving service currently used by over 1000 partner organizations to archive and provide public access to web collections totalling hundreds of terabytes of data and billions of files each year. The role may also assist with specific development projects for other department services and systems. Reporting to the department Head of Engineering, the Software Engineer will help build and improve tools, technologies, and systems that support values-aligned products, at petabyte scale, for a global coalition of institutions providing open access to digital information. Key Responsibilities: * Developing and maintaining department web, data, and archival systems * Writing and delivering high-quality software along with automated tests * Leading the evolution of the stateful systems underpinning our services. * Assisting with production operation issues * Collaborating with diverse stakeholders to translate requirements and features into technical designs and software solutions * Developing deep expertise in a range of the technologies in our stack * Fostering a culture of collaboration, learning, and growth * The role requires some travel to North America based events and meetings, including team and organization in-person meetings as well as possible conferences, symposia, and partner-convening events conducted as part of our programs. Qualifications and Skills: * At least 3 years of experience as a professional software engineer * Strong measurement and analysis skills. The ideal candidate is experienced in adding the right instrumentation to diagnose production issues, and can empirically qualify new infrastructure to bring into our stack. * Experience using Python to build web and data services is preferred * Expertise, or an interest to become an expert, in one or more of the following stateful systems: * Postgres * Elasticsearch * Cassandra, Scylla, or other distributed KV databases * Temporal (temporal.io) * Experience or proficiency in any of the following are a plus: * Web crawling or Django experience * Broad knowledge of the technologies and protocols underlying the web are valued over specific framework experience * Experience building solutions without managed services. We own and operate our own data centers running Linux virtual machines and self-administer the full stack. * Linux system administration skills * Comfort working in a loosely structured environment requiring individual autonomy and initiative within one's scope of responsibilities Job Details This is a full-time, permanent, remote-first position working in a distributed team. Candidates will need to have significant time overlap with North America (and largely Pacific Time) based colleagues. Compensation will be commensurate with experience and the role is open to candidates of varying seniority with a general salary range of $110,000 to $125,000 that will take into account experience and location. Applicants must be eligible to work in either the United States or Canada. References must be made available upon request. The officers approached the door, a brief nod between them, and they knew it was time to begin the familiar sequence. The first officer knocked loudly three times, while the second took on a speaking role.
“Police! Open up!!”
After a few moments of quiet, a gruff voice, muffled behind the closed door, spoke up.
“Come back with a warrant,” came the unwelcoming reply.
“Oh, but we have one. We have a signed search warrant for this property, so come on out,” the officer confidently replied.
“I wanna see it, then,” the voice from inside countered. “Slide it under the door.”
The officers looked puzzled, no one had ever asked to actually see the warrant.
“Well, we don’t have a paper copy of it,” the first officer said.
“Right, everything is on Docusign these days,” the second chimed in.
“Put your phone through the letter box then, I’ll take a look at it on there.”
“I’m not going to give you my phone,” the second officer replied, his phone now in hand. “What’s your email address? I can forward you a copy.”
The gruff voice provided an email address to the officers.
“Ok, I’ve sent that it should be in your inbox now.”
“Nothing.”
“Ok, check spam - sometimes they go into spam,” the first officer interjected.
“Ah yes it’s in spam. But it’s not opening, it says I have to login to my DocuSign account. I don’t have a DocuSign account?”
“Well. Can you just sign up then?” Asked the second officer.
“I ain’t paying for DocuSign!” The voice replied abruptly.
“I don’t think you have to pay, it’s free to view documents.”
“I don’t wanna risk it, I have so many subscriptions,” the voice inside responded.
The officers contemplated their next move.
“Do you have a printer?” One asked.
“Yes,” the voice inside responded.
“Ok, does it have AirPrint?”
“I think so? How could I tell?”
“What’s your wifi password? We’ll join the network and we’ll be able to tell,” the officer responded.
“Ok. Wifi password is $42xnskwfgewzfgekueod!&3.”
The first officer rolled his eyes.
Fifteen minutes later, after breaking the WiFi passcode into manageable chunks, the officer was finally connected.
“Ok. I see the printer. It has AirPrint. Thank God. Ok, I’m printing now.”
“Nothing is happening,” said the person inside the house.
“Ah, it just said you’re out of yellow ink. Do you have any more yellow ink?”
“I do not, but why do you need yellow ink? Just print it in black and white?”
“Yeah these new printers want you to have all the inks before you print.”
“No way. And yet, I’m the criminal?” The voice inside replied.
“Right?” The officers laughed, before finally becoming resigned to their fate. “Ok, we’re going to go print the warrant at the station. I’m out of daily printing credits so will have to wait for them to reset at midnight. Please don’t go anywhere or remove any evidence from the property until we come back.”
