The dark side of the Force is a pathway to many abilities some consider to be...unhinged
@catsalad Hardware switches for cameras are really important!
@catsalad And that's why direct hardware control is more important than software control. A camera cover would do wonders here.
@rgbunny @catsalad
Yeah, @frameworkcomputer laptops have two switches next to the camera, one for the camera and one for the mic. They’re really cool and I’d love to see that on more computers

@catsalad hahaha but surely this is not real, right...?

.....right???

@waocats @catsalad
It's not, and yet, it doesn't seem that far of a stretch that they'd add something like that, does it?

@neko @catsalad If many businesses didn't start doing RTO, I think it would be all the more believable that something this dystopian would make its way into video conferencing software eventually...

Speaking of dystopian, I believe previous versions of Webex allowed hosts to turn people's mics on without their consent (src: https://web.archive.org/web/20240704085227/https://help.webex.com/en-us/article/nz09ab5/Webex-App-%7C-Mute-or-unmute-other-people-in-a-meeting#id_92642)

@waocats @catsalad probably not https://fullfact.org/online/Google-Meet-cameras-on-satire-account/
Still happy my work laptop includes a physical slider for the camera tho :D
Turn on all you want, nothing to see but the infinite void xD
Google Meet is not introducing a button to turn on all cameras at once - Full Fact

An image that appears to show a screenshot of the alleged new feature is circulating on social media.

@darkphoenix @catsalad @waocats

Dittos!
"Turn on" the cameras all you want.

Every camera in this place is physically covered until or unless I wish to share my video. πŸŽ₯

.

For laptops without integrated covers, there are inexpensive products for this purpose:

@catsalad
Which App is that?
And is it available on @fdroidorg ?
@catsalad "OH JEEZ, WHAT THE HECK, uuuuuuuuh, no i dont really wear pajamas..."
@catsalad the button of the face of pure evil
@catsalad Sandboxing app might help like in android or linux's flatpak, where you need to give permission to access devices. But a tape is definitely better.
@catsalad And this is why you physically cover your camera when you don't use it.
@catsalad is it possible to learn this power?

@catsalad
I kind of hate that this is a feature honestly.
@catsalad god I loved the fact that my laptop had a physical camera cover during distanced courses

@catsalad

Interesting.

#Malware like #StateSponsoredMalware from #NSOGroup & #GammGroup have had this ' feature ' for decades.

@catsalad This is why there is a sticky note covering the camera on my laptop.

@catsalad
"Oh my god what are you wearing"

Brief pause, "me? Nothing, why? What? Listen if you want to talk dirty you'll have to join my only fans and wait until after I finish this meeting"

@catsalad
That's the Meet interface πŸ‘€
Just a meme edit or a Google Classroom feature?
@catsalad I risked much more with an open mic than with the webcam and there is no hw mic cover for that πŸ˜„
@zabow Take an old mic jack, cut the wire and plug it in! I keep a few of those handy :3

@zabow @catsalad

For most devices you just need to plugin a 3.5" Jack and the integrated one is even when turned on inaccessible :)

@agowa338 @catsalad Wait, with the TRRS single jack for headphones and mic, if I plug the headphones, the internal mic still works... so I'd have to use a TRRS jack and short the mic pins I think.
Anyway, at home I use this ext mic that I can physically disconnect πŸ˜„
@catsalad My laptop's camera is permanently off (and when I'm at work, the laptop is also stashed behind my screens), so good luck with that.

@catsalad

Love that so many people employ physical means to block cameras.

@catsalad Then you can see the back of the index card I hang over my webcam 😜
