Let’s hope this draws on evidence from across the spectrum of research into children’s digital media use. “The French president launched the Children Online Protection Laboratory to shield minors from harmful internet content”. https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.politico.eu/article/emmanuel-macron-france-child-protection-online-harmful-internet-content/amp/ #medialiteracy #digitalchildhood

Yes, lots of under 13s are using social media platforms like TikTok. https://www.weforum.org/agenda/2022/10/children-digital-safety-social-media/ #medialiteracy
How can we improve online safety of children who have adult social media accounts?

The UK’s communications regulator Ofcom has found children are faking their ages to access social media platforms, raising online safety risks and exposure to harmful content.

My favourite thing about this platform so far is the lack of in-jokes, inference and ‘if you know, you know’ insiderism.
Thinking a lot lately about social media for kids and young people. Recently I’ve interviewed a 9 year old who regularly uses Snapchat for one on one chats with their friend; a 14 year old who amassed 35k followers on #BookTok (and then shut it down because it was no longer fun); and several 8&9 year olds who use Minecraft as a social media platform. These particular kids seem to have way more agency than than is often attributed to 8-14 year olds using digital media.

“I think a certain optimism is required. A pessimism of the intellect, optimism of the will, Gramsci said. That means hard thought, hard graft, recognising what the world is like, recognising the way the terrain is set against you, and then remembering the openness of history, and seeing whether one can intervene”

Last week I got to interview kids aged 8-12 about their digital media use and digital citizenship. This week I’m interviewing 12-16 year olds about teen reading and the links to digital media such as #booktok. #research #ilovemyjob
Look forward to working out how to ‘mastodon’. I’m hoping it will be a friendlier place to hang out.
