Could someone better-at-patterns than me help me understand what I'm supposed to do here? I don't understand the diagrams or what the end product is supposed to look like.

Picked this up from the library and thought I'd share in case any of my fellow sweetiepies are interested!

Not implying we don't need to be vocal about opposing the rampant misogyny/transphobia/racism/etc but some of us don't have the spoons to be in menace mode all the time.

Just some nature photos I took last year in case you need a timeline cleanse.

This is late, but I made this dress out of a thrifted blanket for Christmas and I think it turned out cute, so I wanted to share it! I used the Ivy Dress pattern by OhMeOhMySewing on Etsy. I made a lot of clothes in 2024, and I feel like I'm finally at a point with sewing where I can make things that I will actually wear. (I've been sewing since I was 12, so it took a while.)

For my first ever contribution to #PortfolioDay, I'm sharing some of the drawing-based pieces I made in 2024!

If this is your first time encountering one of my posts, hi. I'm an artist and designer based in the midwest and I do a lot of printmaking, sewing, and fiber arts. Perhaps you'd like to follow along?

I don't have to certify the quality of a poem written in my sleep.

I would love to be the kind of person who has a year end wrap-up ready to go, but I'm simply not. I made so many projects that I never posted about!

Instead, here's a new multimedia print that I'm starting. The "print" part is forthcoming. Looking forward to making as much space as possible for art-making in 2025 🧚‍♀️

Does everyone's work training platform have a totally superfluous feature where you get coins to build a crest? A feature that developers spent many hours on that has no benefit to the user besides being silly? No?

Finished my quilted bag! This took 30+ hours to make and I felt capitalist guilt the whole time!

Despite that, for my first attempt at both quilting and making a bag, I love how it came out.

My first attempt at quilting. The rectangles don't line up perfectly, but that's okay, I'm just winging it and I accept that I'm a complete beginner.

It's going to be a cross-body bag once I make the rest of it. I wanted something smallish that would fit my iPad, sketchbook, phone, and wallet but wouldn't be any larger than necessary.

I also wanted to use up little bits of scrap fabric. I'm really liking the color scheme so far!

After looking at it some more I think maybe I'm supposed to sew the dart at the top first. And those lines on the sides are just fold lines? But I don't understand the function of the fold lines

@desiree it's not entirely clear but my understanding of what it is asking you to do is this:

Fold the two Half's together (so yes the two points you marked should kiss)

The line for the dart seam should be lined up on both halves from doing this. If so pin together.

Sew the dart seam in the direction described.

Open it back out and the fabric will hold a shape as per the dart.

@desiree which step are you stuck on? Are you working on the bustle or the sleeve?
@t60n3 I'm working on the bustle. I'm confused about what the lines on the sides are for - they're something to do with a fold but I don't understand how the fold should look or what its function is
@desiree Looks to me like (doing same thing to all the bustle pieces, like an assembly line) 1. put a narrow hem on the bottom of the half circle. 2. stitch that dart shut up top of the half-circle. 3. Fold the half circle into a quarter circle so that the two dots touch each other. 4. Turn the bottom edge of the quarter circle upwards like a hem. 5. Open out and pin two together, then sew the long curving edge of the bustle piece. 6. Gather and stitch into place on the bodice. Good luck!
@desiree I’m not sure where you’re stuck, but sometimes you can find a YouTube video of someone sewing the exact pattern you’re making, or look for someone making something similar.
@desiree that is confusing. Usually darts are marked as a triangle-ish shape. You fold the fabric making sure both sides match and stitch across that line and it creates shape. I don’t see anything like that in your pattern piece? Are there markings on the paper pattern that didn’t get transferred?
@minorbeatrice that was what threw me off - there was only one line on those side markings. A couple of people confirmed that those lines seem to indicate a fabric fold, so I'm going to try it that way. Thanks for looking at it!
@desiree glad to help, I like a good mystery. if you fold along that line you should see where the fabric indents a little and that's where the stitch line should be. then when you iron it to the side it should align with the fabric again. If that makes sense?
@desiree hi! What I understand is the following: you want the lines at the V (roughly where my yellow lines are) to match up and be sewn. That’s the dart. Then, I think the lines you marked with “do these kiss” are a guide line for you to fold upwards (wrong sides together) - kinda makes me think of the border of a beanie that has been folded up :) It will look like figure 13.
@desiree Then you take the curved edges of the bustle, gather them and sew them to the bottom of your bodice (there might be some marks on the pattern to find some alignment? Otherwise seems like the dart is somewhat aligned with a side seam. )
Sewing it in this way will bunch up the flat edge, which will make it look like a bag. Like the ones attached at the bottom of figure 16.
This is how I read your two pictures :3 I hope this helps and best of luck!
@nuria thanks so much! This clears it up for me and I'm going to try it on scrap fabric first to practice 🙂
@desiree My apologies for not getting back to you sooner, I was experiencing a pile-on by some bros and forgot I turned off notifications. Glad to see other folx were able to help!
