DesireeCould someone better-at-patterns than me help me understand what I'm supposed to do here? I don't understand the diagrams or what the end product is supposed to look like.
After looking at it some more I think maybe I'm supposed to sew the dart at the top first. And those lines on the sides are just fold lines? But I don't understand the function of the fold lines
BridgeMakes ⚪@desiree it's not entirely clear but my understanding of what it is asking you to do is this:
Fold the two Half's together (so yes the two points you marked should kiss)
The line for the dart seam should be lined up on both halves from doing this. If so pin together.
Sew the dart seam in the direction described.
Open it back out and the fabric will hold a shape as per the dart.

Meyari McFarland@desiree Looks to me like (doing same thing to all the bustle pieces, like an assembly line) 1. put a narrow hem on the bottom of the half circle. 2. stitch that dart shut up top of the half-circle. 3. Fold the half circle into a quarter circle so that the two dots touch each other. 4. Turn the bottom edge of the quarter circle upwards like a hem. 5. Open out and pin two together, then sew the long curving edge of the bustle piece. 6. Gather and stitch into place on the bodice. Good luck!

minorbeatrice@desiree that is confusing. Usually darts are marked as a triangle-ish shape. You fold the fabric making sure both sides match and stitch across that line and it creates shape. I don’t see anything like that in your pattern piece? Are there markings on the paper pattern that didn’t get transferred?
@minorbeatrice that was what threw me off - there was only one line on those side markings. A couple of people confirmed that those lines seem to indicate a fabric fold, so I'm going to try it that way. Thanks for looking at it!
@desiree glad to help, I like a good mystery. if you fold along that line you should see where the fabric indents a little and that's where the stitch line should be. then when you iron it to the side it should align with the fabric again. If that makes sense?
Núria@desiree hi! What I understand is the following: you want the lines at the V (roughly where my yellow lines are) to match up and be sewn. That’s the dart. Then, I think the lines you marked with “do these kiss” are a guide line for you to fold upwards (wrong sides together) - kinda makes me think of the border of a beanie that has been folded up :) It will look like figure 13.
@desiree Then you take the curved edges of the bustle, gather them and sew them to the bottom of your bodice (there might be some marks on the pattern to find some alignment? Otherwise seems like the dart is somewhat aligned with a side seam. )
Sewing it in this way will bunch up the flat edge, which will make it look like a bag. Like the ones attached at the bottom of figure 16.
