If you're like me, then you were really happy to learn about Mastodon's enthusiastic support for image descriptions, and you were eager to join in.
Then you went to actually write something and realized you have no idea how to present visual info in a way that is helpful/enjoyable to those who are #VisuallyImpaired or #Blind.
I found this guide really informative: https://uxdesign.cc/how-to-write-an-image-description-2f30d3bf5546
Post-viral Edit: Don't forget to give the author some love on medium. They did the work!
Looking to get some gorgeous BIRD photos with delightful and often amusing DESCRIPTIONS in your Mastodon feed? I recommend following multitalented YA author / songwriter & musician / webcomic creator @angrykem.
Here is a quick and incomplete listing of #publishing people I am very excited to see here on Mastodon. #Writers interested in traditional publishing should give them a follow as well:
@grammargirl -- #grammar tips galore
@debbieohi -- #kidlit and illustrator queen
@salesses -- #writingcraft in the real world
@jamteayang -- #editor and sharer of good content
@victoriastrauss - protector from shady shit
+ so many more! Drop your faves in the thread!
I also speak with some experience. I started one of the first online communities for writers back in the late 90's.
I began it to connect w/others & it was fun at first...but mainly because of the MODERATION needed (putting out flamewars, admin & infrastructure), I ended up less & less time of creativestuff. Hugely stressful, and I've since decided I will never help RUN an online community again. Would much rather be a regular participant. :-)
Summary of my experience:

This post has been moved over from my old website, mainly so I can post it as a cautionary tale for those considering starting up their own Mastodon instance or other online community. In June/2000, I sold my Web site to a company to the U.S. and moved to Philadelphia for six . . .
To those creative types thinking about starting your own Mastodon server with the intent of growing your community, I strongly recommend FIRST listening to Ep.510 of @atpfm (start at around 1:02 timestamp): https://atp.fm/510
And in terms of potential time investment, I advise reading: https://www.nytimes.com/2022/11/21/style/mastodon-twitter-adam-davidson.html
Anyone out there have an active Post account yet? I've put myself on the Post waiting list. I'm intrigued by what looks like the overlap of blogging and social media.
I am really enjoying Mastodon, but I can tell that it is NOT and SHOULD NOT be a Twitter replacement (see my pinned blog post about why I think this).

#TwitterMigration
Just another friendly reminder for all those #ChildrensBook authors and #KidlitArt illustrators:
There is a new Discord Server specifically for the #PictureBook and #MiddleGrade community. Writers and Artists are encourage to jump in, as we can't know when entire platforms may disappear out from under us or what changes may happen in the future. Keeping and maintaining connections in a variety of ways only makes us stronger.
Hope to see you there!
OK, based on an earlier tweet, and follow-up conversations with @keithjones, I want to share with you a *REALLY USEFUL* Mastodon tip.
Tired of seeing the same boosted posts in your timeline, over and over again?
Here are two things you can do.
