them: who radicalized you

me:

Another nice nostalgic mischaracterization of history.

First, with respect to War Crimes, the UN and most international human rights organizations have a consensus that Israel is guilty of War Crimes and Genocide. However, the most powerful European nations, and the U.S., by virtue of their weaponry, and their economic and political power, get the de facto ultimate say. And they never call it a war crime when its not in their interests.

Second, with respect to protest, totalitarian states never allow any protests. Democracies do, but only to the extent that they don't threaten profits, and the power of the ruling class. As soon as they seem to be gaining mass support, threatening profits, making things uncomfortable for the bosses and politicians, they get shut down, often violently. This was true in the 1960s, 1980s, 1990s and today.

Already having fun on this flight. They came by with the drinks cart and offered ‘anything you want’ so I ordered a small coffee with one sugar and two ketchups (she said no)

dump amazon, order direct from the company itself

#AmazonIsEvil #JeffBezos #RobberBaron #GreedyBastard #PredatoryCapitalism

@grrlscientist
Find a company off Amazon
Check dealer, sometimes an address is or further info is included in the details.

Pls do Use an ethical search engine and find the company or other dealers offering same product.
It is often not cheaper to order off amazon due their terms of service demands.
I have been able to reduce my purchasing from amazon by about 99% thus far.
Working on reaching the point where I can close my account. I was a prime customer that is no longer the case.

@lohankuo @grrlscientist

I dumped Amazon years ago. Knock on wood haven't encountered a case yet where I haven't been able to find the thing •somewhere• else. May still be Big Box Oligarchy (self-setting clocks being the current quest), but much as they've tried, Amazon •doesn't• have a monopoly on everything.

@cavyherd same. I used to go to amazon first by default for everything. I gave up at the end of 2020. Now I try to find what I need in a physical shop or their website first, then ebay for stuff that's not easy to find (although I've noticed a lot of businesses I used to buy from have moved off ebay, so eBay is probably screwing sellers). Don't miss amazon one bit. I wish I could remember my login so I could close my account.

I didn't realise how much I'd been overpaying for things. The aloe vera I bought from ebay 2 years ago was £7.50. I found the exact same thing for £4 in Pak's. Medical grade olive or almond oil is £6+ on ebay. Exactly same brand and bottle size, £2 in Pak's. I've been exploring the independent shops near my work and found a lot of things I'd been paying so much more for before. I am finally turning into my parents 🙏🏽

#boycottamazon #screwbezos #shoplocal

@SilverArrows

During that last year or two I was still using Amazon, when they'd started that "1 click" purchase, everytime I'd click on it, I'd hear Obi-wan's voice in my head, "Seduced by the convenient side of the Force." Turns out, head-Obi-wan was prescient.

@cavyherd @lohankuo @grrlscientist I've encountered one single instance where Amazon was the only seller of a product I really wanted and that was a book that apparently they published.

I decided that I didn't need that book that bad.

@madjo @lohankuo @grrlscientist

Good for you!

In this day and age, it's not unlikely it was AI grey goo anyway....

@grrlscientist I've done this so many times over the past few months. Same or next day shipping rarely exists on anymore even with Prime and they hardly ever ship multiple items in the same box so cutting waste isn't even a valid reason to buy from them.
@grrlscientist I did this the other day...shipment arrived from Amazon fulfillment. Same with things I have ordered from eBay. The decline of brick and mortar stores means that my options are online, or do without for a number of things. I am moving toward doing without whenever possible, but that's not always easy!

@LeslieES @grrlscientist

This. Too many companies their "shop" page - forwards you into Amazon 😞 I am trying. I finally managed to find my cat's food reliably at PetSmart of all places. Chewy only had it every once in a while.
OTOH, for little things that are manufactured in China I'm getting them off temu, which is still a middleman, but at least I'm buying from the manufacturer's middleman, and not a reseller's middleman 😕

@grrlscientist you might want to use another search engine as well, don't google.

@grrlscientist

Indeed.

In some cases I've found they use Amazon delivery services anyway, - though I would imagine for a considerably more reasonable cut.

And some don't even bother to offer direct sales.

By and large it works - probably more easily with a different search engine, though, as Google tends to hide what you are actually looking for, these days.

@grrlscientist

you lost me on google

@faab64 @grrlscientist Yes, give Amazon more money because you don’t like Google. You really showed those billionaires!

@mls14 @grrlscientist

Are you stupid?

Seriously what is wrong with you people? You think one evil is better than the other.

Just get lost moron

@faab64 @grrlscientist I use DuckDuckGo. You know what it meant.

@Jennifer @grrlscientist

Using Google is the problem.

If you don't see if, then I was right to point it out and id you use DDG as your search engine, it makes it even worse

@faab64 @grrlscientist so what search tool do you recommend if you don't like DDG? There sadly aren't many others.

@Jennifer @grrlscientist

Are you having problem with English, or I am losing my ability to explain things?

The freaking text says "google it", what part of that do you not understand, o don't give a shit what you use. My comment was about the original text not yours.

JFC.

@faab64@vivaldi.net @grrlscientist I am happy theres a great block feature here, Farhad is blocked. Why do some people think it's fun to be such jerks?
@grrlscientist I would recommend a different search engine. Scammers have recently been found to be paying for Google Ads.
@grrlscientist always done this way!!! Tank you for this tip in every case
@grrlscientist best yet don't google it use Duck Duck Go

@grrlscientist

also re-verbing:

query
search term
look it up
try these terms online
use your favorite search engine

@grrlscientist 6) if it can only be ordered through Amazon, or delivered by Amazon, it is not a cool product.
@maccruiskeen @grrlscientist came here to say the same. And the seller is likely a single day knockoff from China that might not even exist.

@grrlscientist
I already lived at time, when it was normal behavior buying stuff online of a single company and trying to do it at Amazon was weird. 😉

@citizenk4te

#AmazonIsEvil #JeffBezos #RobberBaron #GreedyBastard #PredatoryCapitalism

@grrlscientist

Thanks for urging people to use the last weapon available to honest, fair-minded "little people": the right to shop elsewhere.

It doesn't matter if Amazon still gets to deliver the package. If you place the order elsewhere, the greedy corporate parasite will still feel a little "Ouch!".

@grrlscientist I started using Amazon as a shopping *tool* a few years ago. I haven't found anything on Amazon that I can't order from the original seller for a similar price and delivery options. Even if ordering from the seller is a little more expensive or a little slower, I'd rather support that business than Amazon.

Amazon is like a drug. It's a convenience that's hard to quit. Sometimes resistance involves *inconvenience*.

@grrlscientist 1. @Mojeek their company name. Let's not trade one evil empire for another!

@grrlscientist

Ordered from Walmart and the seller was Walmart, but delivery was Amazon. The same thing happened when I ordered off of eBay.

I can shop locally and in the back of the little "mom and pop" type store, are cardboard boxes that read, Amazon.

Depending on where you live, avoiding Amazon is a lot harder than you think. But I do agree people should try whenever possible.

@Linux @grrlscientist this, and oftentimes you pay the price of the product again in shipping if you order direct

@Linux @grrlscientist

Walmart and eBay are evil too

@grrlscientist Maybe the issue is that a lot of dedicated gluten-free companies are small and want to offload fulfillment, but I often struggle to find GF foods that I can't get at my local stores on a company website. The added issue is that one usually has to spend a certain amount to get free shipping, meaning that I have to get more than I need and want, for example, fill a cart on one site for cookies, fill a cart on another site for cereal, fill a cart on a third site for nut butters, etc.

@grrlscientist I was addicted to Amazon up until about four months ago. I knew I would go back to it if I still had access to Amazon because it is so convenient, so I deleted my Amazon account (they don't make it quick or easy).

I have basically been following the strategy in the image. I'm saving money and not purchasing as much useless crap and I have started to donate some of the money I'm saving to nonprofits.

One site I found to be a good replacement to Amazon for books has been https://bookshop.org You can select a local bookshop who will receive profits from your orders.

I really do miss 2-day shipping but that is something that I am willing to sacrifice because I want to do the right thing and not contribute to the problem.

Bookshop: Buy books online. Support local bookstores.

An online bookstore that financially supports local independent bookstores and gives back to the book community.

@grrlscientist
Once upon a time, if there was something I wanted I would look to Amazon for reference, ratings, price and delivery. Now I use Amazon as a reference to find the right product and buy from the manufacturer. Mostly food supplements.

@grrlscientist

"Amen" - my 8th month NO Bezo pin

@grrlscientist I have purchased ZERO items on Amazon for about a year now.
So much less clutter & recycling in the house.
Don’t miss it anymore.
@grrlscientist I've been trying this, and my shipment has been stuck in customs for 3 weeks so far. :(
Still, better than supporting bezos!

@grrlscientist yes! Been doing this for some time now.

Often I still search for things on Amazon (their search is quite good and you can skim reviews) and when I find what I want from a merchant, then just go directly to their non-amazon store to purchase.

@grrlscientist Even better: Use search engines other than Google.

@grrlscientist but double-check that they don't use Amazon as their fulfillment provider.

Tried this with Anthony's products, but they were still shipped by Amazon.

@grrlscientist I did exactly this 3 months ago or so for the only products I still ordered through Amazon. They both offered discounts as well as options to ship regularly and get a discount for that. No brainer.
@grrlscientist At my house, we have been doing this for some time.

@grrlscientist @hermannus

... and remember the companies where you ordered and visit them again, as you can't relay on search results .

Normal (smaller) companies give better service to returning buyers.

@grrlscientist

HERE IS YOUR ALT

[You can nip back in and add it]

Find a cool product on Amazon?

That company exists OFF Amazon, too.

1. Search the company's name

2. Order from the company's site

2a. Can usually find a 10% code

3. Still get product in 2 - 8 days

4. Company avoids losing 25% margin share to Amazon

5. You avoid giving money to Bezos

@grrlscientist I’ve been trying that. i’m currently living in the netherlands. i was ordering a bucket of baking soda from amazon. i tried to order from the company itself, a german company, they took my money, then cancel the order saying they only ship within germany.
@grrlscientist I have been doing this for a while.😉
