Do we really need Google Search to morph into a ChatGPT answer engine?

Google is rolling out "the most sweeping set of changes to its Search product in years" with AI summaries as default, AI agent background monitoring and a major redesign of how search works.

The hidden trade-offs are energy consumption (up to 100x), privacy erosion (more data mining) and transparency loss (accountability firmly in Google's control).

We believe search should connect you to the web so you're in control.

An informed choice about alternative tech isn't always easy so here's the truth about search engines...

True independence is rare. US tech (Google, Bing and Brave) power most alternatives.

Real sovereignty means data and money aren't syphoned off by those US firms.

The privacy paradox is you're still feeding the data mining ecosystem.

Renewable energy and green credentials are dependent on the supply chain.

A Brief History of Searching

How searching for information has evolved over time.

The mentioned Search engines here still use Bing/Google as their index from what I researched. Ecosia and Qwant are working on their own index but @Mojeek (UK) seems like the only one producing their own results. I am trying Mojeek for the first time, so far so good.
